Further Things That Are Wrong (Part 1)

Thank god this place exists, could you imagine some of this crowd talking to actual humans?

Slavery is fairly hot on the heels of Nazism as a historical evil, current day fans of each tend to be the same people too

I guess the difference in common perception arises from the fact that Nazism hasnā€™t benefitted from 150 years of historical whitewashing and doesnā€™t have soft focus documentaries with soft, lamenting music romanticising its true evil

Iā€™m not whitewashing anything ref Lee, but different times Sidney - for all his faults militarily he was from what I read good, morally ref slavery etc obviously not,my point was to hide history isnā€™t good, also Washington had slaves but plenty of statues / paintings of him, victors write history.

Slavery is not just historical, there are more people in slavery now than at any time in human history. Most of it occurs in Africa and Asia though, so no doubt to you itā€™s deemed racist to highlight it.

I wouldnā€™t be in favour of tearing down statues, monuments, churches/temples or anything of that ilk, in general. I think once you decide to start, itā€™s literally a never ending road to having everything torn away.

I also get the feeling there is some selective outrage at play here. Iā€™ll freely admit I know shag all about Robert E Lee and his exploits, but it does seem unfair to target his statue in particular when so many other symbols of oppression, slavery or outright genocide still remain to this day (go to Tianamen square and see a big photo of chairman Mao, for example).

I think humanity is far better served leaving things like the pyramids (built by slaves), statues of people like Lee or Mao or other such historical items intact.

Iā€™d imagine itā€™s a source of some embarrassment for citizens of the new South

More whataboutery.

You donā€™t understand the term whataboutery. Slavery today is more relevant than slavery of the 18th century.

Yourself and the nutcase you support on here are typical of the cowardly outraged. Outraged about everything as long as it is a safe distance away or a safe time ago. Any criticism of Englandā€™s atrocities in Ireland raises your lickspittle hackles. Sid has an excuse as heā€™s English, whatā€™s your excuse?
