It’s a good point that Flatty makes and has made before. The fact that someone is from a good family shouldn’t count in their favour for sentencing it should count against. They’ve had every advantage not to turn to crime and yet here they are. Also, if you take someone being from a “good/respectable family” (since when is a judge placed to make pronouncements on that!) As counting in their favour then the implication is the opposite counts against. It’s one step away from “jail the poor”. It’s classic right out of Victorian times and it’s clearly complete bollocks.

That’s it. There’s theories on criminal justice system and why penalties are imposed. Punishment vs rehabilitation.
A good background is lawyer speak for not likely to offend so no need for rehabilitation.
A bad background is lawyer speak for person doesn’t deserve to be punished.
Both are just pleas for leniency using the rationale for sentences/sanctions.

I almost collapsed when I clicked the link. I’ve bought several used cars that lasted years for that kind of money and occasionally even less.
I’d be viewing any lad that buys clobber like that for that money with extreme suspicion.
