Gaa split season, killing Meath football since 2011

Hardly any adult club hurling of consequence between now and next July in Wexford. Give it ten years and they wonā€™t know what a Hurley is in Wexford.

Can anyone explain to me how Kildimo/Pallaskenry nearly went under?

Was it financial debt or was it over the differing geographical sides of the club?

Also, how did @BruidheanChaorthainn go from saving his club to wumming on TFK about a non topic, we all know it needs to go back 3/4 weeks.

Its a tricky one alright, we had groups of 3 during covid which was fair enough in the circumstances but that really isnā€™t enough games in a normal situation. We had 16 teams until 2010 and 3 teams were relegated 2 years in a row ( Intermediate champions promoted as normal) to trim it down to 12, basically a few teams in Senior were completely off the pace and i think a return to 16 would see the same scenario. 3 groups of 4 would be tricky working out the last 8 but maybe thereā€™s a solution there.

Built a big club house in kildimo at the peak of Celtic tiger and had a huge debt to pay. The Crash game and many players emigrated and many walked away from the club for different reasons.

Your an idiot if you think it needs to go back 3/4 weeks. Thatā€™ll even make it worse. The inter county season is about six months too long ffs.

Give me your season so in bullet points please.

Club finals St Brigids weekend would be decent.

Especially with the new bank holiday.

Why do we need another four weeks of inter county games ? The championship is awful and the league is pointless.

Iā€™d be fairly certain for amateurs itā€™s vital they fit they donā€™t take the league any bit serious nowadays or theyā€™ll be finished by the end of the round robin.

Itā€™s way too long a season. Itā€™s crazy.

So to clarify you donā€™t agree with either the supporters of the split season or the traditionalists on here?

The inter county is miles too long.

Waterford were flying in the league and were done by June.

Clare were flying for the Munster championship and were done by the all Ireland semi final. Literally legless.

Thereā€™s something in that Imo but itā€™s too early to be sure.

These guys are amateur players. They donā€™t get time to rest like pros despite trying to train like them. Having all these games is crazy. Itā€™s simply too much.

Even the costs of running these squads for 7 or so months is unsustainable for many counties.

What exactly is the point of the league now?

Iā€™d agree with this.

We saw in 2018 too. There was a couple of times teams had to play three weeks in a row and they totally and utterly collapsed every time.

There should be ref flags going up all over this format. The league is totally redundant.

A league followed by a league is just nonsense

The old Division 1A and 1B league was much better.

Limerick getting out of 1B was massive in their overall development.

Does anybody actually seriously think we are better off with Wexford playing Dublin on a Saturday night on the may bank holiday than a round of club championship games ?

If you seriously prefer the inter County option god help you.

That break between the League and Championship is very important.

It builds anticipation and allows players refresh going back to their clubs. It used be great there a few years ago around early May hearing Maurice Shanahan scored 2-11 for Lismore or Patrick Horgan scored 14 points for Glen Rovers.

One League running into the other and Limerick facing Cork or Tipp facing Waterford twice in 5 weeks is ridiculous carry on.

I get the feeling the ultimate aim is to turn it into an NFL/AFL regular season where thereā€™s one League of around 11 rounds and then a play off format at the end for the top 6 or something.

Iā€™m not necessarily disagreeing with your point but in 2017 Mayo played seven weekends out of nine including two games which went to extra time and two more draws and by the end of it they were playing the best football that team ever played when they blitzed a much fresher Kerry team. So it can work the other way too. That was also the year when Mayo were relying on a very narrow panel with at most 17 players trusted by management.

Kildare in 2010 (6 weeks) and Dublin hurlers in 2013 (5 weeks) are other examples of teams who played numerous weeks in a row and by the end of it were absolutely flying.
