Gaa split season, promoting Meath football since 2025

Reality cuts no ice with the budding Alan Milton/Simon Harris type PR merchants on this thread.

I’m a player and I’d rather play on a Saturday or Sunday. You get a longer sleep on the weekend and don’t have to overly exert yourself in work on the day of the match. Plus you can fit your meals in at appropriate times rather than being stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to dinner around 5 with the match throwing in at half 7. A Friday night is also a nuisance for anyone doing a serious college course any distance away.

No one here gives a fuck what the players want pal

Who the fuck goes to college on a Friday either?

Mandatory labs and the likes. I knew a few who wouldn’t have been finished until half 4 or 5 every second Friday. The Thursday night definitely wouldn’t suit a student playing on the opposite side of country either.

An old college timetable taking you up to 4pm. By the time you’d be back to your college accommodation and grab your bags it could be almost 5 before you’d be hitting the road.

ā€˜The odd weekend?’

Shur there’s only 6 or 7 weekends of Club Championship for most lads now. If you cant be around to play on Sunday’s for those few weeks we can forget it. Not every club has to play every Sunday either. It can swap around for clubs week on week.

Play all league games on Friday nights or at Saturday midday by all means but Championship is different.

Some proper counties like Tipp and Kerry still abide by this principle and Sunday’s are filled with games but its a worrying trend to see it become a zombie zone period more and more elsewhere.

Sky Sports Super Sunday back now too. The lowest common denominator of Paddy Footix has to be catered for.

There’s an odd game on here and there on a Thursday or Friday usually because of weddngs.Youd rather young lads had no life and miss out on friends big life events just so it doesnt upset your week.

The majority of senior and premier intermediate games in Limerick so far are on Thursday or Friday, it’s a joke.

How many games and how many have been Thursday/Friday?

The majority

From a quick count on the Limerick GAA website, 16/24 senior hurling games have been on Wednesday-Friday. And 15/20 premier intermediate games have been on Thursday and Friday.

Fair enough, the county board must be happy enough if they’re facilitating it though.Gives people more chance to see more top class matches.

I don’t think games played at 6.15/6.30 on a Thursday and Friday are going to attract as many spectators as the weekend. It can be hard to make those games with work, etc.

It’s also awkward for players, especially ones not based at home.

It’s a bit of an insult to the split season (which I’m in favour of) if the games are run off by players popping into to play a game on their way home from work.

Do you do any reffing yourself?

If shortage of referees is the issue then you could play the intermediate and junior games on Thursday/Friday and the big games on the weekend.

So it’s good enough for the intermediate and junior club fans but not the senior boys.

Gway ya hoore

Yeah the marquee games should be on at the weekend.

But you said earlier it was about the players?
