Galway GAA to shop local for new senior hurling team manager

NO outsiders need apply for the vacant Galway hurling team managerâs position if county GAA officials stick to their âshop localâ plans.
That scenario would rule out any prospect of the likes of Davy Fitzgerald, whose recent exit from the Waterford post fuelled speculation of a possible move west, and twice Tipperary All-Ireland winning supremo Liam Sheedy succeeding Henry Shefflin.
But another Tipp native Eamon OâShea, who was added to the Galway coaching staff this year, would meet the criteria for the job as he has been long-time domiciled in the city.
It is hoped to have Shefflinâs replacement in place by early September following the expected exit of the Kilkenny legend from the Galway helm last week.
A five-person committee, including County Board Chairman Paul Bellew and the countyâs new Finance & Operations Manager SeĂĄn OâConnor, will be tasked with finding the man to lead Galway hurlers for at least the next two years.
The final line up of the selection committee â it will feature two people with a sporting background other than GAA â wonât be finalised until âexpressions of interestâ or individuals invited to apply for the position â are known to avoid any conflicts of interest.
A potential shortlist is current Dublin boss MichĂ©al Donoghue, who has guided Galway to their lone All-Ireland title over the past 36 years, former team coach Mattie Kenny, current St Thomasâ and county minor manager Kenneth Burke, and OâShea.
Geoffrey Lynskey, who guided Galway to two All-Ireland minor titles, is regarded to have âburned too many bridgesâ in the past, while current U-20 managerâs Fergal Healyâs claims for promotion to the top job are reportedly compromised by not winning an All-Ireland minor title with what was regarded as a decent team during his two-year term.
After three years in charge of the Tribesmen, Shefflin cut his losses after a disappointing tenure which failed to deliver any league or championship silverware.
McIntyre would know all about burning bridges anyways so he can empathise with Lynskey.

And abject performances
Heard Mattie is going to Westmeath. I also heard MOD was definitely staying in Dublin but that was before Henry walked the plank.
That qualifier where we got beat by Waterford in Thurles under him and John Lee, extremely unfit after finishing off a doctorate over the summer, was literally shaking the ground like an earthquake warming up was one of my worst Galway experiences.

According to that Maroon + White podcast Donohoe is manager of Clarinbridge this year. Mad that he will do that instead of looking at Dublin SHC games. Maybe he wants to return to his native shore.
Heard similar about Mattie. Coach Sully in for that job also.

Iâd prefer to think it was the players charter that came out last year that attracted him to the job. The disciplinarian in him would have loved it.

The ending with the bed-ridden gent perking up when Sam calls into the house at the end would bring a laugh to most miserable soul.
