Mickey Graham confirmed but going completely under the radar is that Corofin’s Dave Morris has also joined as a coach.

Joyce must have been convinced by Brady on the podcasht singing Dave Morris’s praises with Turlock for the last few months.

I’m convinced by Brady anyway

He cost a few pound according to Brady

I think Morris’ effectiveness might’ve peaked with the greatest Corofin outfit but he’s still a good addition. If he could get PJ and Scan to ditch the 2003 training plan then he’d be worth his weight in gold.

100% agreed. Morris is a good addition to that back room team.

Galway chair: ‘Pádraic would never target a manager from another county. We wouldn’t stand over it’

Galway chairperson Paul Bellew has refuted suggestions they approached new coach Mickey Graham while he was still Leitrim manager.

On Thursday night, it was confirmed that former Cavan manager Graham will join Pádraic Joyce’s setup. Corofin native Dave Morris, a highly-regarded coach and analyst, was also announced.

Earlier this year, Graham was installed as Leitrim manager on a three-year term, succeeding Andy Moran. Two months after his appointment, Graham stood down.

Cian O’Neill’s move to become head coach of the Kerry footballers meant Galway have spent weeks searching for a replacement. There had been much speculation about Graham’s arrival.

“We are fully aware of how it looks,” said Bellew.

“From our perspective to be categorical about it from the outset, coaches move around. Pádraic would never target a manager from another county. We wouldn’t stand over it. As a county chairperson or a management committee. We know how it will be interpreted. Mickey’s availability had nothing to do with the coaching vacancy in Galway.

“That is clear. Pádraic has actually been talking to a number of coaches over the last few weeks. He was keeping me updated on that. The opportunity presented itself for Mickey to get involved as Pádraic changed things up.

“It is important as well to point out the other addition to the coaching ticket in Dave Morris. That is probably getting overlooked and a great news story from Galway’s perspective. When Cian left, Pádraic was going to shake things up anyway. I have spoken to Leitrim as well, because I am aware of the narrative around it. It was made clear we didn’t approach Mickey while he was manager and that was accepted.”

Graham was part of Joyce’s Connacht backroom team for the interprovincial series in Croke Park last weekend. Bellew stressed he has always enjoyed a good working relationship with Leitrim chair Enda Stenson and secretary Declan Bohan.

“The first thing I said to Pádraic about this is that we know how this will look but that is not a good enough reason not to do it because that’s not what happened. Categorically, we didn’t approach Mickey Graham while he was Leitrim’s manager. We know we have to listen to the pub talk and social media element, I get that, but I can only vouch for what did happen from myself and Padraic’s perspective.”

Last week Joyce said he was surprised by the manner of O’Neill’s departure.

“After the All-Ireland final, a lot of us backed away for a while and didn’t make any decisions future-wise,” explained Bellew.

“With respect to Cian, after the All-Ireland he mentioned walking away. As I said in the dressing room afterwards, no one should make rash decisions. Leave things a couple of weeks.

“When it came around to meeting the players for next year, Cian had stuck to that. He was gone and had lined up with Kerry. I spoke to him; he gave me a call in fairness to say thanks for the last three years. It did come quickly but that is the nature of the game. Coaches do move around. His reasons, travel and a young family, it is not altogether surprising.”

Defending Galway SFC champions Corofin take on Maigh Cuilinn in the county final this Sunday. The showpiece will take place in Tuam Stadium as work continues to install floodlights at Pearse Stadium.

“It is fantastic to be in Tuam. We will have league games back there again next year. It is a viable option for big games given the seated capacity is now 3,000. The lights are on track. We are on track to play league games under lights after Christmas. We would expect three home games between hurling and football under lights in Salthill. There is a lot going on at the infrastructure front the last few years and it is coming to fruition now.”

Decent read for the lads
