I think the penny has dropped with Donoghue and co that you canât prepare an Inter County team like a slow, cooked Roast Dinner the way you could in 2017 in this microwaved season format.
Limerick did it in 2022, depends where a team is at Limerick and Clare with their miles and age profile need to approach it differently to others this year for example, Cahill knew at the start of the 2025 season it was now or never for him, no top 3 in Munster and he was done, he rolled the dice and it couldnât have worked out much better.
Cahill had decent players and talented young lads who donât throw their arms up at the first sign of the enemy.
But this time last year he personally wasnât in a position of strength after the disaster of the 2024 championship, Tipperary as a whole was different with alot of promising young lads coming through.
Thatâs the exact thing. Right man right place but right time too. That was some crop of talent, and winners.
Funny how the narrative changes
Well you need a spread of these lads. A Willie Connors for example. That and a few confident young fellas who can back it up when it counts.

Galway legend Cyril Farrell is adamant that it is an âexciting timeâ out west as MicheĂĄl Donoghue gets stuck into rebuilding the senior hurling squad.
Donoghue famously led Galway to the promised land in 2017 but having returned to the helm for a second term last season with mixed results, he faces plenty of change with Farrell adamant that âa lot of positions are more open than everâ.
Their first competitive game of the season bit the dust last Sunday with the cold snap forcing a late cancellation of their Walsh Cup opener against Kildare but Farrell is enthused by whatâs coming around the corner this year.
âItâs an exciting time because that team is going to be changed, thereâs going to have to be a new team built, and even the team that MicheĂĄl picked against Kildare was exciting,â Farrell told the Irish Independent.
âTheyâd all know that theyâre fighting for their positions on the panel, but maybe even making the team because thereâs a lot of positions that are more open than ever.
âThe feeling in Galway is that MicheĂĄl has to be given time to build a new team and all these lads are good hurlers.
âAll the positions are up for grabs and if you get a jersey and perform, then you could keep it.
âI know the morale at the moment mightnât be great and the crowds arenât following them but itâs a very exciting time.

âYou could get a new team and if they start winning a few matches, you donât know where they might stop because these guys are good hurlers and they are mad for road.
âWhile people looking on might be saying, âOh those lads are only there for the Kildare gameâ, a lot of them could be there for the championship as well, definitely a lot more than people think.
âPeople think that weâre down the pecking order, but Jesus we mightnât be down as much as people think. Iâm telling you that thereâs a lot of good lads there and if they click, they could go anywhere.â

Galway will also be bolstered by a sizeable Loughrea contingent when they return after their upcoming All-Ireland senior club final and Farrell has plenty of thoughts about what players will lead the Tribesmen forward.
âI expect Tom Monaghan to be one of the leading lights, Cianan Fahy and Gavin Lee the same, they are the leaders. I know theyâre young but they should be the leaders of the team,â the three-time All-Ireland SHC-winning manager said.
âYou have Declan McLoughlin as well, I know heâs been around but not fully there.
âTheyâve yet to make it but Iâd say thereâs great excitement in the panel because things are wide open, thereâs nearly 15 positions up for grabs. Itâs there for a lot of players.
âTheyâll be saying, âThis is the best chance that Iâll haveâ. You have young McCarthy [Paddy Mac CĂĄrthaigh] from Sarsfields as well thatâs a great bit of stuff. Itâs exciting for these fellas and they will see it as a big opportunity.â
Having won a coin toss in light of last weekâs tie falling by the wayside, Galway will kick off their 2026 campaign with a Walsh Cup semi-final against Offaly this Sunday.
