Galway - quadruple travails part 2

2-6 for Matthew Thompson today against Leitrim. He’s off to the states now until May.

You’d have to admire Cyrils eternal optimism :facepunch:

Galway 2-19 - Leitrim 0-14

Leitrim led by 3 at halftime but a strong second half showing sees Galway home. Matthew Thompson ran amok scoring 2-6 or 2-7 to remind us of how much of a loss he’s going to be.

I think it’s what made him such a good manager. To come back after 85 and 86 and win two in a row with the Galway mentality was some going.

Incredible. It takes some mental strength to be involved in Galway hurling so long and for it not to have broken you.

Was he even thirty when he brought us to the promised land in 1980?

I’d still listen to him all day talking hurling.

There should be a statue erected of the great man.

It’s difficult enough to match Cyril’s optimism when you see that quote. One of the lads mentioned there must be 27 or 28, and seems to be further off the standard with each passing year.

I love Cyril but Monaghan is the ultimate “nice hurler” and you can never rely on fellas like that in the leadership department. Some man to bomb a wide into the Hill too come champo.

Chasing the nfl dream also?

No, study

Gavin Lee cleaned for 5 points from play in the club quarter final. He might be a good hurler but not in the backs.

Daithi and the Mannions are done, time to move on. Galway have always had and hopefully will always have good hurlers, developing a competitive squad is the issue but the raw materials are there. We have been dreadful at bringing though players since 2017, and should never go outside the county again for a manager, both SON and HS were absolute disasters.

Was Cathal Mannion not an all-star a few months ago? He’s only 31 like.

The same cathal mánnion who was one of the best players in the country last year.

Way too early to move on from daithi and the mannions. Tipp showed the value of elder statesmen, and they are all amongst our best hurlers still anyway. Now Conor Cooney…

I’m saying they are done as leaders of the team, time for new blood. We’ve been here many times before, after 2004 you would be tempted to give up on Galway hurling and a year later we were in an AI final after beating Kilkenny in the SF. Same in 2013/14 barren years and then resurrected again in 2015. The problem after 2018 was there was no development of young players and the outside managers stuck with the old guard who tried their best but their best was behind them. Yes there is room for senior players but as Tipp showed last year you can’t beat an infusion of youth.

SON wasn’t. He came very close to toppling a professional Limerick side.
We keep saying we have the hurlers and the talent. We clearly don’t.

His 2nd year was a diaster alright.

Shane O’Neill more or less retired Canning and tried his best to retire David Burke.

I’d have a certain sympathy as his reign coincided with Covid which made the whole thing a bit of a cod but he did a few crazy things and results were poor.

For sure you need to develop players. We have never shown an attitude to do this and the main fault lies with outside managers who are there to prove themselves or to audition for other jobs but not to improve Galway hurling long term
