Galway - quadruple travails part 2

How does hurling change it though? The spare arm tackle seems nigh impossible to referee.
And it’s a balls that whatever new ways they try to referee to improve the game in the league get slated by apes like Duignan and Sheedy and shelved completely in the championship so nothing ever changes.

They have to do something about handpassing - only handpass off the hurl would be a start. At the minute all the reward is for big lads throwing the ball to each other and ‘bursting tackles’, if it was harder retain possession forwards would have to stay up the field a bit more and the space would return for proper hurlers. No passing back to the keeper is another obvious way to start addressing things.

I’d like to see handpassing off the hurl properly trialled so people can see how it works.

Without the one-handed pass, catching the ball would become higher risk as the catcher would be much easier to bottle up. It could lead to more rucks then.

Pulling in the air would come back in vogue but I don’t see the GAA authorities wanting to bring back Liam Dunne style pulling.

Maybe changing the handpass so it has to be an obvious exaggerated handpass, not the current “quick” handpass/throws.

Screeney needs to put on a small bit of muscle and he will be grand. The likes of tony kelly, cian galvin, sean currie, darragh fitzgibbon were all smallish when they started. Even Cian Lynch was slight at the beginning of his career.

How many Loughrea lads involved?

I know they’d poor finals but Tiernan and Cullen Killeen look the best of them and the rest appear a step below Senior I/C standard.

The gym aligned with this obsession with trying to turn Gaelic games into pro sports means young lads need longer to break into senior inter county teams.

The pro season they’ve designed doesn’t help either.

Morgan in the backs is worth another look. Jury out on the eldest of the Killeens alright. Young Shaughnessy has something about him.

Yeah Shaughnessy looks like he has it.

Not sure on Morgan.

Johnny Coen still looks the pick of them. Mind you Tony Og still looked the pick of RHN when I saw them in the summer albeit probs not the full first team (league game so don’t know)

Kieran Hanrahan was the best club hurler in Galway last year. He needs to transfer to the Bridge and start getting cleaned in this years championship and he’ll get his chance then.

Pity they are unavailable. Even if management are going to go with the even younger players, a couple of those lads would have been handy bench options.

Kevin Cooney is a big loss. When he was fit you could see him growing in confidence but he just had a bad run of injuries at the worst possible time.

A bit harsh surely?

Clarinbridge lost a Quarter Final by one point to Loughrea in a game they were in control of for 45 minutes having cruised through the group stages prior to that point.

I think he’s referring to the perception that playing for the bridge gets you halfway up the ladder with a jet pack.

Screeney did fine against kilkenny on Sunday

Screeney will be fine. Same lads here woulda loaded muscle on Joe Deane had they gotten a chance

Make up your mind will you?

About what?

Scrawny Screeney.

What?
