Galway v Kilkenny All Ireland Hurling Final 2012

Can anybody more knowledgeable about trivia confirm for me if this is the first time both the minor and senior finals have finished in a draw?

Sidney, how are you going to manage the replay being on the same day as the end of the Ryder Cup?

Defender shouldnt have gone near him anyway. Sub just on wasn’t going to run up the sideline and hit it off his left over the bar.

Do ye honestly think it was a game of decent quality? KK pretty much handed Galway 1-1 in the second half. Galways total collapse up front was hard to watch. The movement of their forwards totally collapsed and where did Canning go? After his first half he really should have been able to bring Galway to the title. But when they needed someone up front he was nowhere to be seen.

Cody could well have done with the likes of Cha Fitzpatrick and Eddie Brennan coming on there. He must have zero trust in his bench that he didn’t take the likes of Power and both Fennellys off.

Wrong call from Shefflin for penalty surely. Galway were crying for mercy then

I think KIB has a point about the quality. It wasn’t desperate but there was a huge amount of aimless hurling played, particularly by Galway in the second half. Flaking it down the field might be the easy thing to do but it won’t win you the game against Kilkenny. A lot of errors by both teams as well that you wouldn’t expect from them.

Didnt say it was a classic, just questioned him calling it “desperate”. Huge exaggeration.

It was a hugely entertaining game regardless of quality.

Yeah, I didn’t think it was a great game either but all people will remember from a final like this is the excitement of the last 10 minutes. Galway’s performance in the second half was pretty poor, didn’t seem to have much of a plan to it. It really just looked like they were trying to tread water, but they were never going to hold on to that lead without some more from their forwards. They’ll have to take the game to Kilkenny for 70 minutes in the replay, unless they build up a lead the size of the one they did in the Leinster final again.

Marty saying on the radio that the back-up plan for the Sunday Game tonight is for him to go to the Kilkenny hotel and Lyster to go to Galway’s. Anthony Daly is after warning him to “be careful out there this year”

It’s a massive dilemma because the early singles are usually when it’s won and lost. I’ve talked before about how Colin Montgomerie set the tone for a famous day for Europe at the Belfry in 2002 with his dominance over Scott Hoch over the front nine of the first match. Now I may be denied seeing Graeme McDowell doing something similar. It could be an even bigger dilemma for Locke.

That Ken McGrath free and its aftermath at the end of the Cork-Waterford semi-final in 2006 is still sickening.

When was the last time you enjoyed something?

You made a point here before about close games being remembered as better games than they actually were. Today was enthralling but not a great hurling game. Very poor play from both sides at times in the second half, Galway probably slightly more guilty.

Replay should be equally intriguing, Kilkenny didn’t learn much from the Leinster final. Galway lost their way in the second half. I’d say it will be easier for Galway to remedy their mistakes. Galway to win.

absolutely. some of it was aimless, from both sides.
KK are no longer the dominant aerial threat of recent years, not that their deliveries would indicate it.

anytime a team scores 1-4 in a half of hurling and still come away with a draw you’d have to make them favourites.

I’d expect cunningham to learn far more from today than cody, on that basis the empire will finally be toppled in the replay.

and then maybe in a few years time cody the fcuker will find a bit of class and acknowledge another team graciously .

Cody will never change. Mind you, he didn’t get kilkenny to win eight AI’s by being a nice guy. Would be no harm though if he showed some manners.

Interesting that Barry Kelly picked up the lassic Kilkenny foul of pushing the helmet over the eyes under the dropping ball and as a consequence the only KK players to win aerial duels were those with a height advantage like Hogan and Shefflin.

They don’t look like quite the same animals at the back. Now they can be subdued if the tackling ability is there. Equally, Galway above most teams that have met them are able to win the 50-50 balls at the back. They’ve done it twice now so they should be able to do it again. Only when Walsh and Hogan had time and space at the back did the Galway defence start to creak. It’s all about denying Shefflin and co that clean ball and if you can do that you can beat them.

I think Galway might be a bit worried about the collapse in their own attacking game in the second half. The variety disappeared completely. In truth, Burke’s goal was a lucky break and but for it Kilkenny would have won by 4 or 5.

Brian Carthy has a collection of foreigners on his radio show from Croke Park reassuring us about how brilliant the All Ireland final is.

For fuck sake. It was the softest free you’re ever likely to see.

That said I think the draw was the fair result.

Might not have been the highest quality hurling you’re ever likely to see but the second half was enthralling.

Galway backs were immense

Brian Carty is some tool. Cringe listening to him

Reflecting with “Uachtaran Cumann Luthcleas Gael” Liam O’Neill about how a group of German sports journalists were astonished about how the supporters could mingle. Cutting edge stuff.
