Galway v Kilkenny All Ireland Hurling Final 2012

you did… amazed with the progression myself in fairness.

in galways case bizarrely enough the man that might have made a difference yesterday was joe gantly. when cunninghams football style drew galway back the field gantleys size might have held the ball up long enough for galways forwards to get up in support.

in kilkennys case i cant understand why cody isn`t using ger aylward. he is the best forward on the kilkenny under 21s. i expect walter walsh and john power will make it on to the senior side before him but neither of them have the zip that aylward has

:clap:

Fantastic

Kilkenny essentially went man for man on Galway’s forwards but Tannian and Hogan each hurled their own game in midfield and dropped deeper into their respective defences to cover and act as a link man without being picked up.

The match ups were:
Delaney on Canning;
Walsh on Donnellan;
Joyce on Regan;
Murphy on David Burke;
Hogan on Niall Burke;
Tyrrell on Hayes;

Tyrrell was visible in the middle third throughout because he’d followed Hayes out the field - Hayes played the same role he played in Galway’s previous games this year.

Galway started the game with Donnellan and David Burke inside and that’s why Tommy Walsh was back in the full back line with Paul Murphy and was waving across at the sideline for instructions.

Galway scoring seemed to be a trigger for the forwards to rotate and Delaney followed Canning whether he was in the half forward line or moving back inside.

You’ll do well around here mate as it seems you share the same interests of many who visit this hallowed board, however I do wonder if you really are doing “your own thing” as you state above or if those pastimes that you have mentioned are in reality the rope around your neck that is preventing you from doing what you really want…each to their own as you say

Of all emotions that brimmed to the surface after the final whistle yesterday evening, relief was the strongest. Canning got a second chance to redeem himself and he didnt disappoint.

One stat that consoles me with a replay coming in 3 weeks time is that 5 of the starting 6 KK forwards scored from play as opposed to 2 for Galway. Surely to god Damien Hayes, David Burke will have an improved performance the next day.

I havent watched the game on TV since but from my decent seats in the lower Hogan it obvious Cunningham is going to have to work on the quality of distribution of ball from our backs to our forwards.

A nice quote to mark world suicide awareness day mickee, you utter utter cunt of a man.

Carry on.

Galway 9/4 the next day…

When will these stupid cunts ever learn. :lol:

There has been a lot of talk about the poor distribution of both teams, particularly in the second half.

Most of this can be attributed to physical and mental fatigue. All Ireland semi finals and finals are played at an intensity not seen at any other time during the hurling season.

You can have all the tactics you want but when games are played at such a pace, hurling goes back to its most primitive form. Lads literally have split seconds to make a decision and very often they play the percentage of driving the ball long.

When games evolve like this you need forwards capable of winning any type of ball i.e. they cant be one dimensional merchants. One of the reasons in my opinion that Kilkenny have been so dominant is that possess these type of forwards.

I think yesterday’s game illustrated Nicky English’s assertion that there is no tactics in hurling. Kilkenny as their norm in these big games had their backs pick up a specific player with instructions to follow them anywhere. Its about winning your personal battle.

Cunningham has managed to devise an effective strategy of preventing Kilkenny from creating goal chances by getting his half back line to bat everything with players hovering back to pick up the breaks. In the Cody years, Kilkenny have managed to create goal chances through their half forwards winning aerial ball and attacking through the middle.

The problem with this strategy is that you need to be able to put up a sufficient score at the other end and I doubt they have enough talent here to do so against a defense like kilkenny. In addition, whether such a strategy is capable of fully utilising the talents of Joe Canning is debatable as envitably tiredness will result in a lot of aimless clearances.

Maybe Cunningham will learn from Donegal this year and Galway will evolve further as a team going forward. He has done a great job this year and they are no forlorn hope the next day.

Some amount of bullshit around the place.

Mac needlessly up on his high horse again, get down off your ivory tower Mac

Why? The people who backed Galway @ 3/1 on Sunday lost their money.

Great post FP. The intensity yesterday was frantic at times. However great teams will always make use of the possession they get. Tipp under Sheedy did it to great effect.

I think KP is reading too much of TTK, Galway didn’t win but they did kind of thing.

Great players make quality use of possession in these type of games and that is why you simply cannot win unless your team possess enough of said players.

Tipp were somewhat fortunate that they beat Kilkenny minus Hogan and Shefflin. You saw yesterday the impact these two had on proceedings. They are exactly the type of player I refer to above.

To base it on the precise outcome of the last game is slightly missing the point. 9/4 would suggest they are giving Galway around a 30% chance of winning the next game, which imho is too low given the evidence of their two Championship outings this summer.

:rolleyes:

When KK beat them in 3 weeks it will work out at 20% chance given that it will mean 1 out of 5 for Galway v KK in 2012.

+1 to all that

That’s more a not-very-interesting fact than an assessment of whether you give Galway a greater than 30% chance of winning the next game.
