I think he and Kilkenny miss Rice really badly. Riceâs mopping up around the half backline and good delivery of ball to the forwards gave Fennelly a lot more freedom to get forward. This was obvious in the first half of the Tipp game. KK were well on top until Rice went off and struggled until half-time. I think Buckley would have been a better more mobile option than Hogan to play this role
If Brian Gavin gets the replay, as touted today, itâll suit Kilkenny as he tends to let a lot go.
Interesting(or not) that when Galway went all defensive that they were out scored by 12 scores to 5. With the goal being a gift.
The Galway backs particularly the wings and corners are excellent.
He also seemed to turn the Leinster Final when he came on. Wouldâve thought theyâd let Fennelly play the marauding role regardless.
Sitting deep doesnât mean they have to aimlessly launch the ball though, if anything it should mean thereâs more players available to play the ball short to. The problem lies in the fact that they werenât offering each other enough outs and in a lot of cases they werenât even looking for them.
The reality is that one move saved them in that second half, Skehillâs excellent ball to Donnellan and the diagonal ball Donnellan then hit. Kilkenny dealt with it terribly and they got a fortunate break, but for the most of that half they werenât even testing the Kilkenny backs in away that might produce a mistake.

Doubt Galway will get the same head start third time out, if KK win midfield in the replay then they have a platform for goals. If Fennelly finds his form and an able partner then you would have to fancy KK.[/quote]
Kk are finished. Even if they win the replay that will be it. Shefflin will go, JJ might not be far behind.
Why wonât Galway get the same start? Kilkenny were no better than in the Leinster final even with JJ and Fennelly etc back. Who would a likely partner be? There isnât one. Rice is a huge loss and seems to have no obvious replacement. Unless a huge number of Kilkenny players find form in the replay then Galway will have very little to fear. Galway have obvious issues to work on, dropping too deep far too early but there seems more prospect of them improving than Kilkenny.
I do agree with a lot of that but they simply didnât have too many options up front while clearing the ball. Galway would have been better served leaving Canning in a more forward role as he can compete better and win more ball than the rest of their forwards. He was rendered obsolete in whatever role he was trying to carry out.
Repeating something doesnât make it true.

That kk are finished? Do you think they are as strong as they were?
How did they think they were going to create scoring chances in your opinion? Were they just hoping for breaks or hoping that one of the clearances might land somewhere helpful?
Clearly not consistently as strong as the 4 in a row outfit but I think theyâll win the replay and expect them to be the team to beat next year.
Not finished.
When you lose in GAA, youâre âfinishedâ. Itâs just the way it is.

I donât agree. I think Galway will win the replay. Will Shefflin hang in there for another year with the prospect of winning another AI diminished? The likes of Power and TJ Reid will not lead the team to AI titles IMO. Unless the current crop of U-21âs make an immediate impact then they will be no more likely to win than any of Tipp, Galway,Cork and perhaps Limerick/Clare.
Retreating into their defensive shell in the second half has been a trait of this Galway team throughout the summer, they did it in the Leinster final and kind of let KK back into it, They did it in the end of the semi against us despite being well on top and it was very noticable again last Sunday. How many times did a KK defender catch and clear a ball without a challenge in the 2cd half while Galway flooded midfield and their half back line. At times it looked like Galway were playing with 2 forwards, I accept that they are playing a different style but I reckon they need 4 in their forward line at all times.
Taking Burke off was a huge fuck up as well, he had Hogan beaten sick in the first half, he is a big man so why didnt they move him over on Joyce and start pumping ball down on him??
I donât know and Iâm not sure did they know. Thatâs why I suggest they show a bit more confidence the next day and commit more men forward in the 2nd half.
Midfield is the key to the replay. If Smith & Tannion win this battle then Galway have a very good chance. But if KK win midfield like they usually do, then they get goals. If KK get 2+ goals then Galway will be beaten well i think.
The Galway collapse in second half was staggering, only for burkes goal kk would have won by 6 or 7, has to be a serious worry for them
This was very disappointing. Kk were always going to have a purple patch and burkes goal slowed that down and had them wondering. The game was there to be won in the last 8/9 mins but we couldnât do it. Thatâs where the hunger should have told. Strange that Cody left tommy walsh stand beside Donnellan all day, he obviously had them spooked from the Leinster final but he can be hot or cold and was cold the last day. No matter how shagged Niall Burke was he should have been left on, give him a rest in the corner if needs be. Neither Regan or cooney can start the next day so itâll be glennon, would any of them make the kk panel. Doubtful. No point using canning as some sort of decoy, but any gameplan had fallen to pieces early in the second half. We might have let our best chance slip, they were always going to be complacent after hammering a piss poor tipp team and thinking this was a great achievement.
Will Fennelly, Hogan, Power and Larkin be as poor again?
As much as i think Galway have a chance the next day their second half collapse(if you can call it that) must be a worry.
While they had a few poor performances themselves(David Burke was out of the game and Regan didnt really do much outside of a couple of early passes), im not sure if they have the firepower to beat Kilkenny the second day. That said, i hope they do. Hurling needs counties like Galway, Waterford and Limerick to end All-Ireland famines!
I canât help but feel that we left it behind us on Sunday. We should have been further ahead at half time, but I was happy enough with the 5 point lead, as I expected Galway to push on again early in the second and try to âbreakâ this Kilkenny team. Unfortunately this didnât happen, and in the end we were lucky to get out of it with a draw, very lucky.
Any day you prevent Kilkenny from scoring a goal, you really need to be beating them. On the other hand, when your star forward is starved of possession for 35 minutes, then you can count yourself very fortunate not to be beaten. To have any hope in the replay, Galway simply have to find a way of getting Joe Canning into the game on a more frequent basis, while David Burke, Damien Hayes and Cyril Donnellan must make more of an impact on the scoreboard, but right now, I feel that even if these things happen, Galway may well have missed their chanceâŚThis pessimism is subject to disappear at any point between now and September 30th.
?
Larkin and Power have been shit all year so yeah, Hogan(Ritchie) has swapped skill for aggression so yeah again. M Fennelly is half the player he was last year probably because of injury,or, if he was he a Dublin fballer theyâd say he lacked a bit of hunger. You failed to mention Tommy Walsh and JJ who look to be running on empty. The great JJ(and Fennelly) had a glorious opportunity to prove their absence meant a lot in the Leinster Final, clearly it didnât.
ââAs much as i think Galway have a chance the next day their second half collapse(if you can call it that) must be a worry.ââ
You know clearly know little about Galway hurling down the years if you label that a collapse
