Was there any reason given for the Brehony Burke double substitution at half time?
Also Smiths substitution… what was the reason?
Not implying anything here just wondering.
I thought Brehony’s was down to injury, landed heavy on the shoulder just before half time, if not then it was fucking bizarre, he was after settling nicely in to the game. Bringing on Davy Glennon for Burke was strange, even though I wasn’t too happy at seeing Burke starting in the first place. He was actually putting in his first half-decent performance in a while I thought and took the goal very well. I know the Tipp corner backs were getting out in front to a lot of the ball that was being played in, but Glennon didn’t really improve that situation…I wouldn’t rate Glennon anyway, he’s basically a far inferior version of Damien Hayes.
Don’t know the situation with Smiths substitution, he did miss the Laois game with injury and I doubt if he had come back to full fitness before the first Kilkenny game, the three games in three weeks possibly caught up with him. Tannians injury was also a big blow.
I think we can also conclude from the recent three games that Ronan Burke is not the solution at full back. He doesn’t seem to have grasped the basic principles of full back play, went AWOL on several occasions from his position, resulting in goals. It was alarming how easily Callanan skipped around him the other night for Tipps second goal, which was the real boost they needed to come back in to it, you have to be giving away the free and taking the yellow card in them situations. He was also partly at fault for their last goal, himself and a couple of other lads throwing the sliotar around like a roast potato in front of a, by then, rampant Callanan.
