No cabinet, no Taoiseach, no leaderâŚ
Mrs. Mac and 2 of her sisters were in the Merrion this afternoon for some women related reason. 1 of them marched up to Cowen after the press conference asking why he wouldnât resign as Taoiseach. His response was that we need a Government to lead the country
Youâd wonder, if you were the wondering type, how palatable all this is for the Greens. In other circumstances they might hang on and see out the time until March but with a vote of no confidence in the government scheduled for next Tuesday they may well feel compelled to call time on the government. Thereâs only so long you can wait for FF to get their house in order before you say enough is enough. Have the vote on the Finance Bill as soon as possible and then get out.
Why is this even being put forward as an issue? Are FF/Green the only people capable of putting forward the finance bill?
Why canât they dissolve the dail on Wednesday, hold the election in 3 weeks and then put forward the finance bill under the new government in March/April, which was the original timescale anyway, FG have already committed to putting forward the same broad strokes anyway.
FF already sneaked in a final little sweetener to their developer buddies with the 12 months stay before section 23 reliefs are to be scrapped.
If this isnât an option then whatâs the point in even considering an alternative government if they canât be entrusted with this task?
Well I donât think itâs the roadblock it was before but from the Greens perspective they have declared they would stay in government to see the Bill through. Now they canât just withdraw without offering the option of the Bill being voted on. It doesnât mean it will happen but it means they must offer a means for it to happen.
If FG are going to agree with the broad brush strokes then they can support the Bill and get it into law before making whatever amendments they want if/when they get into power. We had an emergency budget last year we can have another one.
I still donât see why it has to be done before the election. The Greens originallu said they wanted the election to be called in late January, they had no problem climbing down from that position.y
I see FG have tabled a no confindence motion in the Taoiseach separate to Labourâs one in the government, surely the Greens canât support that after all thatâs happened in the last few days.
There is betting up on Powers for the next Fianna Fail leader:
Michael Martin 1/25
Brian Lenihan 10/1
Eamon OâCuiv 14/1
Mary Hanafin 18/1
Dara Calleary 25/1
Sean Connick 33/1
Mary Coughlan 50/1
Barry Andrews 50/1
Brendan Smith 50/1
John McGuinness 66/1
Pat Carey 80/1
Looking at that it would seem Michael Martin is a certainty. I always thought Brian Lenihan would make a good leader and would have respect from the rest of the party, surprised to see him at 10/1, maybe he has no interest in it. I see there are no prices available on CrazyhorseâŚ
Watching the news here and I was moved to laugh when they were going through the potential candidates.
OâCuĂv is formally throwing his hat into the ring in an interview on TG4 news at 7pm apparently. Crazyhorse got a mention too when they were suggesting that one of the âyounger generationâ might go for it.
Crazy Horse making a quick reappearance on a Vincent Browne special tonight, round 2 should be good.
Eamonn O Cuiv the Miulliance candidate. Itâs a complete fucking jokeshop at this stage. We need a Ceaucescu type resolution to this.
Around 12 is it you mean?
Itâs unusual for Vincent to be on a Saturday night, but these are unusual circumstances i suppose. Are you going into Greenpark tonight?
They said âlate Januaryâ when they believed the Finance Bill could be enacted (or whatever the word is) then. They didnât really have support for that position from anyone because it meant reducing Christmas holidays etc. They also have their own legislation (Climate Change) which theyâre prepared to sacrifice at this stage just to put manners on FF.
Again, itâs not really that they feel they have to support the Finance Bill before an election. Itâs just that they feel they have to provide that opportunity. Theyâve said theyâll support it. Itâs clearly a critical piece of legislation so theyâre prepared to vote for it. I donât really disagree with your opinion on whether they could leave it pass or not but Iâm just explaining the reasoning behind their stance.
Nothing today changes that significantly and thereâs certainly no calls in the media or in the usual portals for a snap election. Iâm not so sure it will be that straightforward for the Greens though as I suggested above.
Is the Dunps betting service prepared to give me odds on Conor Lenihan retaining his seat the runt seems to be closed
I meant round 2 of the scrap between Vinny & Crazy Horse.
Leaving for Greenpark in 10, what about yourself?
I was at a funeral in Annaghdown last week and OâCuiv was about 2 ahead of me in the queue. A more miserable and midly unkempt man I never saw in a pin stripe suit⌠half thrown together like a lad that was pulled through a white thorn bush.
Crazyhorse, vote early, vote often!
