General Election 2011

Milward Brown poll in Irish Independent tomorrow will show. Poll carried out pre election. Another right wing government here we come!

F 12 ( -4)
FG 38 (+ 8 )
Lab 23 (-1)
Gr 1 (-)
SF 10 (-3)
Ind/Other 16 (-1)

Most of that is just Milward Brown catching up with Red C. Do you mean pre-debate as opposed to pre-election?

Apologies yeah meant that. MB has tendency to underestimate FG support though does it not so more than just catching up I would have thought.

MB have a habit of just being plain wrong from what I hear and read about them.

I still struggle to believe that FG are running as high as 38, unless there has been widespread rural FF voters switching to FG. I guess itā€™s feasible given the widespread anger with FF and the conservative nature of this vote (there is also a smaller ā€˜republicanā€™ element to that vote in certain areas that I assume would go to SF), but it would on another level be almost unbelievable given how deep-rooted the FF-FG split still is in rural areas. I still have a bit of a suspicion that people are lying to pollsters because they donā€™t want to admit they will vote FF given how hated they are by a lot of people. Iā€™d suppose weā€™ll find out next week. I also expect that the anti single party government feeling that will be cranked out by FF and Labour from now on will see FG fall back a bit anyway. Iā€™ll be shocked if the outcome is anything other than FG-Labour coalition.

Good to see that everyone on here is happy to write off a FG government before a vote is even cast anyway. Iā€™d like to think that no matter how cynical I ever get that Iā€™d always give guys a chance to do something before Iā€™d condemn them.

The prospect of Leo Varadkar as Minister for Justice (or anything really) is enough to make me write off anything.

A major reason for FFā€™s dominance over the last 80 years is the simple fact that a large majority of rural people believe FG represent the wealthy and will screw the poor. Given their overt flirtations with fascism this is hardly surprising. I know a lot of older people at home who donā€™t want to vote for FF, but will never bring themselves to vote for FG. Labour have no real base in rural Ireland so itā€™ll be interesting to see where those votes go.

Okay. I just think that level of cynicism (and it would exist among opponents of whoever is taking office, not suggesting itā€™s just an anti-FG thing) is unhelpful.

Yeah, thatā€™s a more articulate way of saying what I was trying to say really! I just donā€™t believe that FG are riding as high as the polls suggest they are in rural Ireland.

Larry whats your opinion on Rockoā€™s comments - see my signature. Not sure of your voting status but do you think Irish citizens north of the border should have the right to determine the government in the Republic?

Can Gerry Adams vote in the election actually?

blue shirts, white collars

This single party scaremongering might be overstated. McDowell played it as keeping an eye on FF, not letting them in on their own unsupervised. That wonā€™t necessarily apply to FG since there isnā€™t the same fears to exploit, i.e. of rampant corruption and feckless incompetence. Voters were worried FF would lose the run of themselves.
Some people might see a FG govt unrestrained by Labour to be a good thing.

The anarchists are here and theyā€™re voting Fianna Fail

Adams can vote as far as I know as he got registered on the supplementary register with address in Ravensdale.
I think Irish citizens north should have right to determine government of whole country and not just Republic. In practical terms this isnā€™t currently a runner though. I certainly think all citizens in the 32 counties should have right to vote in Presidential Election.
Also think all diaspora should have vote in Presidential Election. Not so sure on general election.

Who are you referring to? If posters are criticising FG for some of their right wing policies then surely they are entitled to. Likewise Iā€™m sure youā€™d be cynical about left wing alternative of say Sinn Fein, ULA and Labour.

I have no problem with criticism, I would say itā€™s healthy and important. I actually donā€™t have a problem with most of Labourā€™s platform, and am yet to decide whether to vote for them or FG, though I find the Labourā€™s Way or Frankfurtā€™s Way rhetoric to be offputting.

My main problem was the post where WTB said that FG would inflict misery on people with glee or something like that.

Michael Noonan just after wiping the floor with Lenihan & Burton on the last word.

They will. Their language makes it clear what they are ideologically committed to.

Iā€™d be inclined to agree with him. I think there has been an element of triumphalism in some of FGā€™s rhetoric regarding cutting in public sector for sure.

Canā€™t really see how talking about nothing other than natural wastage and voluntary redundancies is showing some kind of a lust to inflict misery on publis servants to be honest.
