The state election is coming up here too. Kristina Kenneally the Labor leader is a bit of a honey.
How does the PR voting go again, can someone explain clearly and concisely. How does it matter if you vote from 1-10? I thought it was:
First count - if someone makes the quota their number twos are distributed.
If noone makes the quota, the crackpot candidates number twos are distributed.
Etc Etc - how do number 3s and 4s make a difference?
My CSPE days are a while ago now. Apologies.
I take it the Aussies are having a good laugh at us?
Well the way the quotas work means youâre guaranteed multiple rounds.
If your vote for 1 is elected or eliminated and your vote for 2 is elected or eliminated also then your #3 vote comes into play. Each time your vote is counted they look for the next valid vote (i.e. a candidate who is still in the running). The reality is that you get more transfers from eliminations than from surpluses probably with the large number of candidates so your vote will extend a fair way down.
Also worth noting that for the surplus votes being transferred your vote might not count. If you vote Sargent #1 and he gets elected with 6,500 votes and the quota is 6,000 then they donât go and look at the second preference for all 6,500 votes - itâs a sample only that gets transferred to make up that 500.
