General Election 2011

He has little enough to be bitter about. Getting into the Dail with 900 first preferences for jaysus sake.

He sent around a 4-page glossy, colour leaflet last week. The front was him writing something with the tagline ā€œCyprian sets the record straightā€¦ā€ referring to his getting elected with only 900 1st prefs. He had some bullshit paragraph about it. The rest was showing how great he is. It didnā€™t work.

Am liking the cut of this man Mingā€™s jib. He is on Newstalk at the moment arguing with Yates. Tis great stuff.

Iā€™m not too familiar with Ming, but heā€™s no flash in the pan and has been a counciller for quite a while. I daresay he has learned the ropes and wonā€™t just be wading in shouting and roaring, but should certainly bring a different point of view.

Know your Ming:

Have to say now he wasnā€™t letting Yates get the better of him in that interview. Yates maybe right about what he is saying about the impact that the likes of Ming and the other independents may have in the Dail but Ming wasnā€™t accepting it. Good to hear someone standing up to fight.

Ming is no fool at all. As you said he has been around for a long time now in the council and was elected Chair of the Council in Roscommon and also Mayor of Roscommon. He caused outrage when he demanded that everyone took at 50% pay cut on the council, and even more consternation when he refused to say the traditional prayer which the Mayor is required to do upon election.

I saw him on Prime Time about a year back talking about the turfcutting issue and he was well able to debate.

When you compare him to the likes of Wallace in Wexford with no experience of politics, and the Louth football manager Fitzpatrick who ran for Fine Gael and who is meant to be a complete joke shop, then Ming is certainly someone that I would rather have represent me.

Another docu here. Check out Frank Fahey in the first 90 seconds and the oul wan telling Ming to dream on.

Havenā€™t seen that one but The Life and Crimes of Citizen Ming is a great documentary. Farmer is spot on about the difference between this guy and Mick Wallace. Flanagan has gone from having to beg to raise enough money to register for an election to winning a local election, being elected Mayor of the council, to topping the poll for an election to the Dail. Wallace doesnā€™t have the ten or twelve year learning experience on the inside of the political machine that Ming had.

Thereā€™s a bit in the documentary where heā€™s physically grappling with RTE employees in the studio in Galway as they wonā€™t allow him to participate in the radio debate on the day before the election. That was the election where fucking Dana won the seat. To go from being that marginalised to being a significant political figure in rural Ireland, with no money or lobby group behind him, shows genuine ability whatever way you want to spin it. The big parties donā€™t give up their control that easily.

Alot to be said for a pair of balls and some individuality.

Completely agree.

Apparently he got a reasonable level of votes in every single polling station in Roscommon South Leitrim.

He was asked yesterday if he would speak to Fine Gael about supporting them. He said he would speak to anyone bar Fianna Fail. He lamented that they were not fully wiped out with the following line:

ā€˜You know the way when you are weeding your garden to get rid of dandelions, and you think you got rid of them all but there is an auld root left there which means they can grow back. Thatā€™s the way I feel about Fianna Failā€™.

Heā€™s from a fianna fail background as well, albeit old school republican fianna fail. His grandfather was Fr Michael Flanagan who any republicans on here will know from the war of independence. The roar he let out after being elected that ā€œThe people have spoken, weā€™ve been quiet for too longā€ is a quote from him.

Didnā€™t take the job too seriously.

Apparently new FG TD Mary Mitchell Oā€™Connor has just driven her car through the plinth and down the steps outside Leinster House

Did you give him the vote Farmer?

Saw that on TV3ā€™s brilliant FYI (way better than the RTE news).
Bad start for MMOC

Ming was on the radio with that John Murray guy this morning. Murray was trying to make a bollix out of him asking him if he had a ā€œfive joint policyā€. He kept coming back to the joints and asking if Ming still had an odd smoke. Ming said he did, like hundreds of thousands of people in this country including media types who strangely enough would not answer that question themselves even though they were very familar with joints. Put Murray back in his box. Ming says he is taking half his TDs salary and will use the rest to fund sports/leisure activities in his constituency through a trust. reckons better value in doing that than throwing it into the banking black hole if he ā€œdonated it to the stateā€. He struck me as fairly clued in, I hope it goes well for him and the system does not grind him down.

Thatā€™s pretty ridiculous shit from an interview on the national broadcaster. It is nearly always the case though with the mainstream media. If youā€™re wearing a suit and tie youā€™re obviously a person to be taken seriously, but if you have a ponytail you must be some sort of fringe lunatic. It always amazes me how clueless many of these radio show presenters are. They present a regurgitated version of whatever the current consensus is on an issue and anything that strays from that they canā€™t understand at all. In fairness to Ming Flanagan heā€™s fairly quick witted when it comes to dealing with the smuggerati. Most of the ā€˜jokesā€™ wouldnā€™t be new to him.

Surely Ming the Mong should be just locked up.
