Is Sinn FĆ©in now in favour of water charges?
Fine Gael says a vote in the European Parliament means Sinn FĆ©in is now in favour of water charges, but the reality is somewhat different.
The attempt to beatify Lenihan was one of the most disgusting aspects of the early recession. The man made arguably the most disastrous decision in the history of the state, but is loved by some for it because he sacrificed public welfare to save private wealth, and not the reverse.
@Big_Dan_Campbell was asking about the elections of 81/82 and now big the swings were each election:
1981
FF 78
FG 65
LAB 15
Anti H Block 2
Stickies 1
Noel Browne 1
Independents 4
Result: FG/Labour minority coalition. Majority = 84
Feb 1982
FF 81 (+3)
FG 63 (-2)
LAB 15 (0)
Anti H Block 0(-2)
Stickies 3 (+2)
Noel Browne 0 (-1)
Independents 4 (0)
Result: FF minority (supported by Gregory, Blaney and the Stickies). Majority = 84 seats
Nov 1982
FF 75 (-6)
FG 70 (+7)
LAB 16 (+1)
Stickies 2 (-1)
Independents 3 (-1)
Result: FG/Lab Coalition
So no major change from 81 to Feb 82 but a significant switch between FF and FG in Nov 82. And less Independents and Stickies.
Our former Attorney General, Paul Gallagher, who was there on the night of the infamous bank guarantee meeting with the Brians, gave the eulogy at Lenihanās funeral. āIf I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would not have believed such courage was possible.ā
It took some courage alright to āsacrifice public welfare to save private wealthā, as you put it. It still galls me. Saddens me.
Well do you know the way Stalin had your man slap an ice pick into Trotskys skull. Thatās more or less whatās happening here. Both profess to be socialist, ones a Marxist and ones a Trotskyite and one will end up with an ice pick in their skull. Socialism can be a tricky business.
They would in their hole. SF voted for the bank guarantee fella.
The fuckers get to go to Mexico though?

I donāt know palā¦ Iām no fan of SF, but I thought they voted for the Financial Support Bill, but were against the Bank Guarantee Scheme. Maybe @Nembo_Kid or @ChocolateMice can confirm / deny this?
Sinn Fein were in favour of water charges, then they were against it, then they were for it again and it seems they are currently against it again

No, they voted for it. Of course they did as well, it was the popular thing to do at the time and Sinn FƩin are loath to give Fianna FƔil the true patriot space all to themselves.
If SF had maintained one position on this subject, they might have not had such a disappointing general election campaign, from their perspective.
Party says it will now abolish the semi-state body as well as water charges
A SF video from today. Amazing how passionate these people can seem to be in relation to a subject where their position has seemingly changed at least 4 times !!!

Fianna Fail were the ones who initially introduced the idea of water charges, but theyāre now against them.
Amazing, that.
Park the water charges for a minute pal - a non-issue when you boil it down (pun intended), which is mostly offensive to people in rural areas that have always paid for their water. Iām talking about the bank bailout.
Decent article from todayās paper
Given political situation, current model may not be feasible, but it might be least worst option
And weāre done*
Penrose and Burke elected
Irish Water was this governments poll tax.
