General Election 2016

Willie has urged all his voters to give Jan O’Sullivan their no.2… Apparently he reckons Quinlivan has nothing to offer :joy:

You literally couldn’t make it up. Sinn Féin coming under attack in the media for the reaction to Regina Doherty’s comments yesterday. It’s like some parallel universe.

Has Quinlivan not got extensive business experience, in particular from the time he ran the brothel

Regina Doherty has received death threats in relation to her comments yesterday, all brought on by her own actions.

What happens when there is a hung dail?
How soon afterwards does the re-vote take place?

Could TFK step in and run it as one of @Rocko 's trademark blitz polls?

I would just like to state that it wasn’t me.

In fairness she should be able to speak her mind without fear of death threats.

When you look at how this is shaking out you’d be nuts not to elect an independent for your constituency in the hope that you got one of those once in a century chances of that independent holding the balance of power and being able to do a deal. Ok there will be a lot of them, but there is a hell of a better chance of one of these goons being able to pull a stroke for your constituency than some random faceless backbencher in one of the big parties.

Like if Halligan held the balance of power there’d be a university in Waterford in three years. Cullinane, Deasy, Coffey and Butler wouldn’t deliver that in a hundred years.

Don’t bother your hole Mike. @Steven_Naimsith obliged.

There’s a nice irony there in relation to her hysterical hand wringing about consequences.

But too many independents and it will impossible to form a government. It’s ok if the largest party are dealing with 5 or 6 independents then you could look at deals similar to the Gregory deal. The problem is that going on current figures independents could be the second or third largest grouping in the Dail, imagine having to deal with 28 or them.

Do we really want to allow Denis O’Brien to exert his influence over such a process?

They’d handpick 5 simpletons that they can do a deal with most easily and forget the other 23.

Fellas like Wallace would be forgotten about in this scenario because he’s too volatile he’d only be waiting for his chance to sink the a Government. Ditto Shane Ross. A total and utter moron like your man in Roscommon, Naughten, or the Healy Raes is what you’re after here. Promise them a hospital and you’ve bought their vote for 5 years.

If a majority Government cannot be formed, then parties look to form a majority coalition, if one of them cannot be formed then in the interests of stability a minority Government can be proposed.
From memory the last time was 87 when FF were supported by a FG minority. The country was in absolute shit at the time. I think it’s the only time it’s ever happened but @Fagan_ODowd might correct me there.
If no one agrees to a minority government then el Presidente can call for another election. This has never happened as far as I’m aware. The tradition in this scenario is for the outgoing Taoiseach to go to the president to tell him he can’t form a government, the president then rings around and tells everyone to cop on and they start negotiations again. Maybe at this point you could see Martin & Adams get together for the “good of the country”.
If a second election was to be called the outgoing Government remain in place as caretakers.

A blitz poll sounds much simpler

And more fun.

@Sidney @Fagan_ODowd or other students of History what’s the longest it has taken to form a Government? There was a good stretch in the early 80’s wasn’t there?

The longest was 1992, when there was no Government formed until a month after the DĂĄil met.

Where is Maria Cahill in all this? I thought she was an advocate for abuse victims or is that only when it involves Sinn Fein?

Agreed. Let the clergy have their say.
