Varadkar went for the Grealish/Gemtrails vote by choosing Murphy as a candidate and engaging in “welfare cheats” rhetoric
Fine Gael’s problem when they engage with this sort of dog whistling is that they aren’t quite shameless enough to carry it through themselves as a party - they try to court right-wing social liberals too - in the end they only end up damaging themselves
But Murphy very definitely is shameless enough
