General Election 2020 Part 2

Iā€™m not sure they have long term ambitions and this is one last Hail Mary

I see Michael Gove congratulated Taoiseach elect Michael Martin in the House of Commons today

:grimacing:

Iā€™d say we are going back to the people in a few months

Spin Fein and FG look like only parties an election would suit. Maybe Labour under a new leader.

Greens would surely be punished for not going into government and FF are finished.

Good analysis but their vote share had been eroding anyway from the 80s up until the late 2000s. Lynch was popular enough by himself and the 1977 goodies kept FF popular. Haughey was a strong leader but combustible. The decision to back down from the sacred cow of ā€œno Coalitionsā€ was ultimately seismic for politics in this country as well, it gave another opening for small parties and independents to have a larger voice.

If FF had got their way on getting rid of PR in 1958 it would be interesting to see where the country would lie now. Iā€™ve never looked into the background of that too much- were the Inter Party governments the catalyst for FF to pursue the change?

The one thing thatā€™s obvious anyway from listening to Joe Duffy today is that a lot of lads are still fighting the civil war

Green Party could well implode

The Greens need to get out from under the bed

The Greens arenā€™t a real political party. They are a loosely aligned collection of hippies, activists and wasters.

The Greens are kind in a no win, would be punished for not going into government and will prob be punished for going into government

Theyā€™ve no bit of nous about them either. The green agenda should be an easy sell in the current environment but instead of pushing their public transport policies etc they are talking about wolves and lettuce and one car villages

The Greens are at nothing if they arenā€™t in government. It would be fairly ridiculous of them to turn it down when their demands have been met, putting the party above the environment

Two rale Meade accents here talking about rool Ireland

Anyone see Primetime last night? It was a programme for governmentā€¦eh programme. They had 3 councillors that are objecting to it - 1 Green, 1 FG, 1 FF - from the regional studios and then cut back to studio afterwards to Ossian Smyth and Richard Bruton who were advocating it.

The Green councillor was Lorna Bogue from Cork, but Smyth put her down in a very patronising way. He said she was from the youth wing of the party and the youth often have strong ideological views, but heā€™s not in the business of hating other people just because of what party theyā€™re in. He went onto talk then about the programme and why heā€™s happy with it. He kinda misrepresented her position, I felt. Iā€™d say internal Green WhatsApp groups and strategic support WhatsApp groups were hopping afterwards. cc @Rocko
