General Election 2020 Part 2

The great people of Dublin* voted him out.

*Rathdown

FF and FG voters voted knowing they wouldn’t go into coalition with SF.

It would be a betrayal of that 44% to do so.

It’s therefore incumbent on the self declared winner on 24% to form a Government with the various “voices for change” out there. They did “win” after all.

SF have broken you mentally.

Stage 5 etc

No seriously, it is incumbent on them to try it. If you go on about FFG for years and the public vote for a majority of something else, then you have to try that something else.

‘Twas grim enough. The music was better though.

But, but, but — Sinn Fein voters vote for Sinn Fein not to enter Westminster … you were screaming murder on here about SF taking their place and ignoring their voters …

FG ran their election campaign on Brexit — it hasnt gone away — They need to don the green jersey for the national interest and ignore their voters wishes and get on with trying to form a government.

We might have the Shinners in charge, but we’ll once again be administered by British Civil Servants.

The memories of that 1977 FF Government are great. There was a four month postal strike in 1979. All business was done by post at the time. This lead to a huge back log in applications for the driving test. Minister Sylvester Barrett’s solution. A driving test amnesty. Anyone on a second or subsequent provisional licence got a full licence without having to take the test. This lead to 50,000 untested drivers being given a full licence.

Separately the postal strike was seriously undermining Jack Lynch but Haughey aware of this was secretly paying for the food and drink bills the strike committee were running up in Keating’s pub on Store Street. Haughey was 1m pounds overdrawn at the time. For context @Dziekanowski s dad bought a house in a nice part of Dublin for 8grand in 1977.

Yes, I’m just applying your logic.

In truth as elected politicians you should always try to stick to your promises first, that includes SF in Westminster. But circumstances change.

If SF cannot form an administration, the parties who did not totally disown a coalition together should try.

Then maybe, if a government cannot be formed, I do think FG or FF should talk to SF (and others) to see what’s possible. Of course the preconditions of that might not suit the Army Council.

The standard of bollox acting from TD’s has fallen a long way

Stop being so amenable.

Pope John Paul II visit was badly needed.

BANTZ.

I remember it well. Playing ball in the field at the back of what later became Graeme Mul’s father’s house the Friday evening of the results. A lovely sunny evening.

The postal strike was horrendous, Padraig Faulkner was the minister for Posts and Telegraphs I think. My father was on strike for 4-5 months. They got fuck all at the end of it. Postal workers were in a very bad way. It fucked his pension up as well because he lost the earnings from the missing months when calculating his final pension entitlement.

My brother was one of the lucky ones that got a driving license without a test. It was around that time as well when Charlie was Minister of Health that they gave free toothbrushes to schoolkids. They also brought in free milk in the schools for a while. Plastic bags of it as I remember.

Same thing…

I’ve just realised I’m getting old.

I vaguely recall the petrol shortages and the postal strike, did not realise it went on for so long. I recall some ESB strikes when we were left in the dark. Like most households we had a 2 ring gas cooking plate - any night could be camping night.

Good story on Haughey, I had not heard that one. I would think there are a thousand stories about him.
