FG strategists are the best in the business bar none as we saw before and during the election campaign and Iām sure they have a great plan which will be hugely beneficial to their electoral prospects, whatever it is. I hear it may involve furiously alleging that Gerry Adams was in the IRA.

When my Da first started working in Monaghan town in the late 70s, Glaslough Street wasnāt one-way, like it is now. They changed that after a year or so after he started working to the way it is now.
One weekday afternoon my dad started drinking in the Westenra Hotel in the middle of the town and had so many pints so quickly that he could hardly walk leaving the place. He got in his car and drove the whole way up Glaslough Street the wrong way, like you used to be able to do. He could hardly drive straight and he wondered why all the cars were beeping at him. Monaghan Garda Station is at the top of Glaslough Street and a Guard there pulled him over and told him he was after breaking the one-way system. My dad was hardly fit to talk to him. The Garda asked him if heād had a bit to drink and he said he had. The garda told him to be careful driving home and let him be on his way.

The good / bad old days. I have a contractor friend from Vermont who tells a great yarn about driving his da home from the bar. He was 11 and they would head into town on a Friday evening and the da would have a skinful. Invariably he drove the truck home standing up (to reach the steering wheel) with the da asleep next to him. The local cop stopped him a few times, had a look into the cab and waved him on.
