General UEFA Cup Thread
And the prize for that would be entry into next year’s UEFA Cup.

Have you had too much sun lately or something?

Your tendency to reference Celtic in the majority of your Aston Villa posts seems a bit obsessive at this stage.
Yeah so what. Just concentrate on the league again the year after. Its a joke competition that most of the teams dont care about. It might give the club a bit more exposure in Europe but thats too much of a price to pay for not concentrating solely on getting to the Champions League.

You guys were suggesting how much Celtic were going to miss the UEFA Cup. I was just making the comparison. I dont think we should be bothering too much with the FA Cup either.

I’m pretty surprised your attitude is so insular. I can understand the likes of Milan not being too bothered about the UEFA Cup given they’ve won 2 Big Cups in the past 5 years and been beaten finalists also. But if you’ve barely made an impression in Europe since David Platt scored against Inter Milan about 15 years ago then I’d have thought European exposure and experience would be very beneficial, especially to prepare for next season if you reach the Holy Grail of finishing better than 5th in your domestic league, which is probably a long shot in itself.
Abbiati,
Zambrotta - Maldini - Jankulovski - Bonera
Gatuuso
Flamini - Seedorf
Kaka - Ronaldinho
Pato

and that leaves on the bench, dida, pirlo, Inzaghi, Sehvchenko, emerson, Favalli, Kaladze , Ambrosini, borrilello, Nesta and a few others

but they do a serious amount of rotation in the team. team above is generally who has played the most, and could easily have changes throughout.

Senderos hasnt seen any time at all on the field
That is still a very decent team and squad. Would go very far in CL.

Never knew that Zambrotta was gone back to Italy. Jankulovski at centre back? Never knew he could play there. Always felt that Abbiati was a much better keeper than Dida.

Ronaldinho and Kaka together. That must be special. Pity that they are not in the CL.

Italy have produced some great keepers in the last 15 years - Buffon, Peruzzi, Marchegiani, Pagliuca, Rossi. Probably forgot someone there.

Toldo. Never had a whole lot of time for Pagliuca to be honest. Will never forget his attempted flap for Houghtans goal though

Toldo was overrated for me. But I agree with you on Pagliuca actually. Don’t know why I included him really. Remember him letting the ball through his hands against Brazil in the final in 94 and it hitting post?

Also Toldo let the ball through his hands for Wiltord’s equaliser in Euro 2000 final.

Toldo kept Buffon out of the Italian team for a while but you’re right. He never fulfilled the expectations that were set for him

Both Tottenham and Man city are 1-0 up away from home…

Portsmouth 2-0 Milan at the moment.

Nobody, absolutely nobody, gets the better of Tony Adam’s Pompey at Fratton Park.

Apparently.

Milan put on the big shots now

cracking free there

those advertising hoardings are annoying

Pure class from the buck-toothed Brazilian.

Just off the bench and a freekick pinged into the top corner from 30 yards.

2-1.

Lovely goal by Inzaghi. Such an annoying cunt the way he spends the vast, vast majority of his time straying offside, whining at everyone or rolling around on the ground. And then bang - he scores.

He is like a less retarded vesion of Djibril Cisse…

Stephen Ireland scored and played well away to Schalke earlier according to reports.

You have got to admire his persistence. He must be 35 at this stage. Still making the same basic mistakes he always made. Still scoring quality goals tho too. What a great attitude.

Cisse is a fucking idiot.

Its coming to the stage if Stephen Ireland doesnt come back we are fucked. He must be one of the in form players in Europe at the moment. Wonder would Trapp’s 2 holding midfielders tactic be dropped if he did. Ireland is a lot of things but a strong holding midfielder he certainly isnt.

the only way ireland would fit in the current system would be on the right hand side of midfield with a licence to roam in field…Doesn’t have the discipline to sit and hold and trap won’t give him licence to attack from the middle…

He could always take the place of our captain fantastic. He’s currently scoring a lot more fucking goals than him.

You are hardly suggesting dropping McGeady, Puke. Your on your own tomorrow night remember.

Ireland played well in a few games last time around at right mid. Not his position tho. Bit of a fudge putting him out there.

The brave option in that Utopian scenario would be Robbie Keane given some time to reflect on his actions sitting on the mahogany. I really think we would have a fine side at 4-5-1/4-3-3 but in any case it is unlikely to happen.

I would agree that a 4-5=1 would suit better or even a bit more of a hybrid 4-1-3-1-1 could suit as well with Whelan holding in midfield just ahead of the back 4 with Duff and Mcgeady wide and Ireland in the middle dictating the game and Robbie dropping off Doyle and playing deep when we don’t have the ball (He drops deep anyway in every match for some reason)

The reason being that he is a tactically indisciplined clown. like Gerrard. Headless chickens in plain speak. That formation is far too attacking for El Trappo

it is indeed and I wouldn’t expect trap to even try it in a training match…But we are fucked if he thinks we are going to get to South Africa with a midfield consisting tow of the following:
Liam Miller
Glen Whelan
Darren Potter
Keith Andrews

you might get away with one of them but not two of them…Hopefully Steven Reid won’t be out for the season…
