Gibraltar V Ireland Euro 2020 Qualifier

McCarthy doesnā€™t see Brady as a left back he said, and I doubt heā€™d pick McClean there either. Stevens will be left back, Doherty probably second choice for there

Whose your man Travers the goalie?

If Mccarthy doesnā€™t start Byrne he should be run

Ex srfc goalie at the South coast cherries

Itā€™s Byrne or bust.

Maclean is stone useless lads
whilst i agree with the point that as a left winger he is more adept than Brady in the position but so is Mick Duffy from Dundalk
Maclean , whilst a very likable, honest chap who gives 110% for the cause is probably one of the poorest players i have seen play for Ireland

Heā€™ll go Hourihane id say for Whelan?
personally id drop Coleman and go 352 to suit Doherty but maybe stevens cant function as a left wing?
Hendricks Hourihane Brady in the middle - and fire some other mess (ok coleman) in with duffy and keogh

It will be a basic enough 4-4-2 almost 4-2-4 v Gibraltar.

Will be interesting to see what we do v Gerogia. You would assume it will be three in central midfield but whether it is a 3-5-2 or more of a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1. I donā€™t think we have the quality at the back to play with three centre halves personally unless it is away from home where we are setting up to dig in and defend deep.

McClean isnā€™t that bad but he seems to have lost a good bit of pace in the last year and lacks the guile to compensate .

Iā€™ve seen plenty of worse players tbh. He doesnā€™t have a whole pile of technical ability but he is useful and even in the last campaign scored big goals against Austria and Wales.

As a traditional winger, he has something to offer.

Agreed. He was overrated at the start of his career. Then underrated for a bit. Then overrated again and I think heā€™s reverting back to being underrated.

By no means our most gifted player and youā€™d like to do better. But heā€™s been effective for Ireland, particularly when judged against other midfield and attacking options.

A bit like Stephen Hunt back in the day and Shane Long, I always feel that McClean is best used off the bench at international level and has given some very good cameos adding energy and aggression against tired teams.

If it is a straight choice between him, Brady and Doherty for the wide spots. Iā€™d plum for Brady and Doherty and keep McClean as an impact sub.

i would disagree
i would say he has found his level at mid low level championship and is now entering a phase where he will slip down the leagues
If he does loose his pace and his workrate drops it will have a huge impact on him as it was his selling point
His goals in Austria and Cardiff were rare highlights to be honest - his performances since Euro 2016 have been abysmal but not exactly out of place with the rest of the squad
I just dont see any scope for improvement with him really, thats the issue

Agree, moving forward mcclean is not up to it. Oā€™dowda way superior.

Thatā€™s all fair. But regrettably much of our squad is mid low level championship. I think weā€™ve seen the best of him - heā€™s just clearly not one of the worst players we have seen.

Is there any chance Ireland could find themselves between a rock and a hard place in Gibraltar?

Are you saying heā€™d be a better footballer if he joined the Freemasons?
