Gigs coming up

Bicep are playing after gorillaz on the same night, that would be pushing a dream lineup of an evening for me.

It’s a great festival. Or it was anyway back in the day. I went from 05 - 07. It must have doubled in size within those few years and has only increased since.

Is the Primavera festival the hipster anglo-saxon thing to be at these days?

I’ve just been offered a ticket to ed Sheeran tomorrow night.

“Like Gallagher’s set list, the Knebworth audience certainly resembled a massed tribute act to their younger selves: an army of overwhelmingly white, middle-aged men squeezed into the shorts and Union Jack beanie hats of their Nineties youth, giving each other drunken bear hugs and lining up against the perimeter fence to urinate in joyous union. Suddenly that tenuous link between Britpop and Brexit felt a little more persuasive.”

Union Jack Beanie hats? Surely he meant Union Jack Bucket hats. Ffs sake.

Liam is a broad church (as narrow churches go)

Public Image Limited tonight at the National Stadium, where I’ve never been for a gig, or indeed any event. Looking forward to it.

That should be a good ‘un.

It’s a no frills venue.

On my way in to it myself. Saw BB King there before.

Are you wearing your scarf again?

No a maroon top.

Ok. I didn’t have great hopes for this. I was expecting an evening of pantomine rants and gurning from a lad who had become a parody of himself in recent years.

Two songs in (Religion from the first PIL album and Memories from Metal Box) I realised I was going to be wrong. First Lydon insisted the sound be cranked up. Then it became clear that the touring band were excellent and that despite the passage of the years Lydon’s voice had lost none of its power. The bass pulsed through the crowd (mostly elderly punks) in a manner that would have done Jah Wobble proud. Highlight for me was a powerful version of Death Disco/Swan Lake. The cover of Leftfields Open Up with the chorus line Burn Hollywood Burn was delivered with gusto. The night finished with the crowd pleasing Rise and if anger is an energy Lydon still has plenty of both.
