Mahon is a tricky bastard of a place, especially if the wind is up. The holes down by the water can be nightmareish. The one with the big cunt of a tree blocking the fairway, the 5th I think, and a big dog leg to the right. great hole.
I’ve found sometimes the greens can be hit and miss in terms of their condition, which you’d expect for a municipal course.
Breaking 80 round there is not to be sniffed at
One of the ‘el banditos’ i play with shot -2 in mahon last summer and the prick is playing off 9
The 5th is a tough hole alright, the par threes might seem difficult enough but when you’ve hit thousands of balls at them you get their number, happy days
the par 3’s are weak alright and there are too many of them on the front 9. the 4th is a flick of a wedge, the 6th is a wedge, 8 and 9 are mid irons. 3 of the last 4 holes on the back are par 3’s. poor design. the 9th is a shit hole imo. a mid iron with fuck all protecting the green
18 is a lovely hole with the tree blocking the left of the green. If they put the pin on the left it’s a beaut. It’s still only a 7 iron at most.
You pick your way around Mahon. You’d need the driver on what, 5 holes, maybe 6? All about the short game but in fairness golf is all about your short game. Putting drills and chipping practice is the best way to prep for golf imo. You’ll always score well then on the days you go well off the tee and you’ll always score something the days you don’t.
You could but the one across the estuary, you can drive off the 1st too. Does the second go back down the hill and the 3rd back up, argument for driver off those too. The 17th needs a bit of uuumph. 3 wood/5 wood would do you for most of the par 4s
When I played I was a stickler for putting. Practice practice practice and when you’re done, practice some more. I would park up in Water Rock back in the day coming home from work and do an hour most days on my putting. Three balls, 9 holes on the putting green and head around it going as low as possible. Any three putts no matter where in the drill go back and start again.
Bottom line when you’re playing a round of golf - three putting is not an option.
a fella I play with maintains he’d rather lose a shot OB than three putt. It drives him to absolute lunacy if he three putts. (very rarely happens). The same fella is the best at course management I’ve ever seen. If there is any risk, he’ll club down to leave himself a 30 yard or 40 yard chip short of the green. He get’s up and down for par 75% of the time and 24.99% bogey
I’ve been playing with him 2 years and I’ve only ever seen him make one bad double bogey. The best hands I’ve ever seen around the green
I invested a lot of time in putting, dave pelz book, a few eye liners and trainers etc. Eventually bought a book by a madcap yank putting guru, the craiced cunt was emailing me and all after telling me of his travels around ireland. It went full dive into the physics and mechanics of it, combined with human spatial awareness and intuition. Im no scientist so was all a bit much. Ultimately spending an age trying putters to find one that i liked looking at and suited my natural shoulder turn made all the difference.
Mount Juliet was very definitely my favorite course when I used to play golf. I had a pal who was captain down there one year and I must have played it ten times that year for free.
Not at my home course in Clonmel. Par 3s fraught with danger except for the 3rd. I hope to break 80 there someday but stableford seems to suit me best as I am a bit wild off the tee.
Yeah it’s a tough course and quite long. As you probably know it is very undulating so knowing where to put the ball and local knowledge is key around there. Very picturesque as well. Distance membership is only €175 a year.
I was a very good putter but generally dreadful around the green, I’d often take out the putter from well off the green in competition, especially if anybody else was relying on me,
I was a dinger with the fairway woods, I’d often caress a five wood rather than force a mid iron
As you can see below they require serious hitting. A par 3 measuring over 175 yards can be a 7 iron one day and a 5 iron the next. In many other courses I play there might be 2 par 3s that are a wedge or flick of the wrist. There are not too many gimme holes in Clonmel. Good test for any standard player.
Yeah theres a bit in them alright. Do you have to be a member of another place for the distance membership? If they let me sneak in and get a gui card for 175 im prepared to lessen the vitriol on 89
