How does audible work?

I was going to purchase a kindle book last night and there was an option to “add audible narration” for €3.50.

For this to work would I still need an audible subscription or can it work on a per book basis?
What do I get on audible if I subscribe?

You get one free book a month (regardless of its price) on audible and access to a good bit of free podcasts/exclusive content which is fairly hit and miss

You sign in through your amazon account, you get a free book every month and access to a load of shows only available on audible,
I think its well worth it if you spend a lot of time on your own/commuting/running etc

Best story in it?

Best writer out there for me, that’s a fabulous collection of stories, hard to pick a favorite though the long puck one certainly stays with you.

Kevin Barry has a new novel out, I haven’t like either novel so far but he’s such a great short story writer that I’m sure I’ll give it a chance soon, interesting premise

I was wandering past Hodges and Figgis one evening a few weeks ago when I saw that Kevin Barry was giving a reading of his new novel “Night Boat to Tangier”. The reading was good. The book is written in half poetry, but not in an annoying way, which takes exceptional talent.

Afterwards I bought a copy and got him to sign it. I told him that I’d read his short story “The Coast of Leitrim” because someone put a link to it on TFK. I said it was brilliant.

Kevin Barry said that was the first happy ending he’d ever written and he started Night Boat to Tangier right away afterwards. He gave a big shout out to TFK and said he was proud of Tassotti for his transformation. Kevin Barry is a FOTF.

rivetting read

I’ve just enjoyed Manhattan Beach, by iirc Jennifer egan.
Nothing much happens, but it’s a nice slow relaxing read.

There was no bad one.
I enjoyed the Long Puck one, it was a little bit cliched but very well written. The one about the barman talking about his ex was good and also the one about the busty shopkeeper.

What was the story with the guy who jogged to Shannon airport? Was that a dream/daydream as he killed himself?

The shannon story did not stick with me and I can’t recall it.

The first 15 Lives of Harry August by Claire North is excellent. mystery thriller about a man who lives his life over and over and remembers the previous lives

Is it worth getting on this lad’s bandwagon?

Ah definitely. You won’t read better stories on modern rural Irish life. The fact most of the stories are set around Tipp/ Limerick helps add to it too.

Fabulous book, reminiscent again of Tome and Time again or Life after life by Kate Atkinson (you should definitely read this)

Don’t under any circumstances read Clare North’s follow up book called Touch

You’d be foolish not to read Donal Ryan @balbec

Holden is a lovely lad, having a hard time. When I read it first I thought that the reveal half way through about his poor dead brother was a bit corny and unnecessary. Folks saying that Holden has a perfect life need to take a serious look at themselves. Like how dare kids from rich families be depressed, horrendous stuff.

Have you ever read Franny and Zoey?

I read Kevin Barry’s Night Boat to Tangier on holiday. Enjoyable stuff. He has a peculiar writing style which might not appeal to everyone but he creates some memorable characters and dark tales.
