I don’t really watch films, as they take up too much time. But I made an exception for An Cailin Ciuin tonight. My goodness, it was terrific. It was on TG4 but I only watched it out of curiosity because my young lad plays football with the son of the couple who made it. Lovely people & I never knew I was in the presence of greatness. Really beautifully made.

I used to watch It’s A Wonderful Life nearly ever Christmas at one stage. Stuck it on there tonight for the first time in 8 or 9 years. Still a good picture.

This is great. Recommended to lads at a loose end with no Boxing Day football.

Metal Lords is the best film out there.
Watched a fillum called The Dig there a couple of days ago. Not the famous one, one straight out of 80’s Ireland depressing literature. The lead actor is absolutely superb, vulnerable and likeable whilst looking a hardy hardy bastard. I thought it was a good film.

On a side note we watched The Full Monty with the kids there as well. They never even heard of it. Looked dated at first, but we all really enjoyed it. They were a bit taken aback at how grim the north of England was but there is such a thread of joy in it.
I still think the opening scene from the big blue, and this from the full monty are two of the most beautiful pieces of cinema ever.

Brassed Off was another great film about plucky Northerners.

FFS it’s St.Stephen’s day, will you desist from mentioning grim North of England movies. It’s a flick for the summer, marching band season…

There’s a thread of joy through all the great northern film. Triumph (of sorts) in adversity.
