Claire Balding always brings such knowledge and enthusiasm to her presenting duties. Good to see Rishi Persad on duty for C4 as well. He did a fine job presenting the World Bowls Championship for BBC.
mate,
you are a card carrying horsey set member
who is going to trot around fastest today
prove your worth
I’m going for Rare Bob.
I just hope he doesn’t end up being served rare this evening in a Liverpool restaurant.

What a beautiful day for my fair weather trip to the bookies. Spring has arrived. Let us mug punters unite. We may just know more than the “experts”.

In English maybe?
My bet is 3 horses and 1 jockey to be put down, pile on lads.
fantastic post Sid
It sums up how most of us norms feel about horsey racing
Surprised you would have described yourself as a norm.
If I make a €2 each way bet and my horse ends up placed, do I get the “win” part of my stake back?
I usually make a profit on the Grand National (as I did again this year), and as a result I should know the answer to this question, but as I’m a once a year punter I always forget.
In an unrelated matter I’d like to wish the very best of luck to QPR owner Tony Fernandes in his role as chief negotiator for the organisers of the world’s greatest race in their search for a new title sponsor to replace John Smith’s, whose association with the Grand National has now come to an end.

the once a year punter who still ends up a winner is what makes the race greatest Sid
The great day has come around again and the 40 greatest racehorses in the world will do battle at the new, later time of 5:15pm.
I’ve gone for:
Rule The World - €0.50 each way @50/1
I think he can rule the horsey racing world today. If he can get a place, I’ll Take That.
Holywell - €1 each way @14/1
Factories, trains and houses won’t stop him running a big race today.
Sir Des Champs - €1 each way @25/1
It won’t be lost on fans of the great race that Jenny Pitman became the first female trainer to win the great race on April 9th, 1983 with Corbiere, and as today’s race is on April 9th, I’m backing Nina Carberry to become the first female jockey to win it aboard “Didier”, as the horse is known to his friends.
Home Farm - €0.50 each way @80/1
I like the name so I’ve gone all in on this one.
A stirring rendition of the National Anthem.
Up the RA
Splendid tipping.

17:33 Bet Winnings 17:15 GRAND NATIONAL 4m 2f 74y - Rule The World @ 50/1 (GP) (Win) €64.50
First Irish winner since 2007. Terrific stuff from the progeny of the 3rd Baron of Killannin.
I’m thrilled for the Mouse after his family tragedy less than a year ago. You sensed Rule The World was being pushed along from above. A heart-rending story as good as any the People’s Race has ever produced. Up there with Bob Champion and Aldaniti and better. Only the Grand National* can produce these sorts of stories.
Lovely to see the big smile and the genuine wide eyed enthusiasm on Robert Hall’s face when RTE cut back to the studio after the replay of the race. He could barely sit still. Robert has always struck me as a thorough gentleman.
