Ger Loughnane was gas all the same. He would routinely switch a forward who would lose two balls in a row or take off a substitute who he brought on in the forwards less than ten minutes after bringing him on like Taeffe in 95, Whelan in the 97 Munster final or Scanlon in the 98 Munster final and was always chopping and changing in the forwards.
Yet when it came to the backs you could count on one hand the amount of tactical switches or times he moved a back off his man as he felt he was struggling. Aside from injury or suspension I can’t recall him subbing off a back because he was under pressure aside from Liam Doyle’s last game in 2000 when his legs were gone and Brian O’Meara burned him. Just shows you how mentally strong a unit they were, even if they struggled for a short period the belief was there that they would figure it out and right it.
There is a lad who played centre back on minors last year and is the closest ive seen to Curran. He was centre back on the midleton cbs winning harty team while only in TY.
He is one of a number of very good young cork players. They’ll be winning all Ireland’s again very soon if they have the right senior management in place.
Yeah exactly. Used the ball well. Nice hurler as well. Good in the air even though he was giving away inches to his opponents. It’ll be interesting to see how he develops.
