Greyhound Racings Shame

I don’t read the doggie threads, so I cant say for sure if this has been posted here already, but surely deserving of a thread of its own. Feel free to guess which poster may have been involved in this disgrace.

Beware, the pictures are quite graphic and while greyhound followers may not be disturbed by such scenes, ordinary decent folk most very well will be.

A MASS GRAVE containing the remains of at least seven racing greyhounds has been uncovered in Co Limerick.

The grave was discovered over the weekend by a walker in a former quarry in the south-east of the county, around 40km outside of Limerick city.

The site contains open and unburied remains of racing greyhounds – identified by unique tattoos on their ears – and may contain more dogs, as local animal welfare groups say the site is extremely overgrown.

Limerick Animal Welfare, which examined the site, said the site had been used on more than one occasion, and that the remains of two recently deceased dogs indicated they had died as a result of impact to the head.

Marion Fitzgibbon of the Greyhound Rescue Association of Ireland (GRAI) said she feared that the site was only the “tip of the iceberg”, saying the number of greyhounds registered with Bord na gCon and the number of registered litters suggested that between 8,000 and 10,000 racing greyhounds disapeared every year.

“These dogs did not need to die,” she said. “Even when these dogs are unable to race anymore usually at the young age of 3-4 years old, they can still live long and happy lives.”

She added that the discovery of the grave portrayed the greyhound racing industry in a poor light, and that “every respectable greyhound owner” would welcome firm legal action being taken against those responsible.

The thread title is in very bad taste. There is nothing to link greyhound racing with the death of these animals. As a former employee of Bord na gCon I am appalled at your rush to judgement. In all my nights working on the turnstiles at Shelbourne Park I never saw any greyhounds killed by a blow to the head or any other means.

Admins, delete this thread. There is no evidence to suggest a real doggy person did this.

Time will tell Rocko. I’m going with my gut on this one and sticking with the original thread title.

Marion Fitzgibbon spokesperson for The Greyhound Rescue Association of Ireland (GRAI) who has visited the site said, “Two greyhounds, a black bitch and a fawn dog were killed fairly recently as their bodies are not decomposed. They both appear to have been killed by an impact to the head. There are other greyhound bodies in the quarry, Limerick Animal Welfare estimates another seven or eight but the terrain is very overgrown and a proper search may reveal more.”

Marion continued, “We know these dogs are racing greyhounds, as each animal is required to have a unique identifying tattoo in each ear. Some of the tattoos are still legible to the naked eye. This information has been passed to Limerick County Council and the Gardai have also been informed.”
GRAI is calling on the Irish Greyhound Board, the Bord na gCon, to thoroughly investigate and report on the circumstances that led to these dogs being killed and dumped in this way.
The GRAI spokeswoman went on, “Bodies being left to rot in the open, as well as being a public health hazard, also portrays the Irish Greyhound Racing Industry in a very poor light and does not live up to the “World Class Welfare Standards” they aim to achieve for greyhounds… We are certain they will be as shocked as we are upon learning of this killing pit. We are sure that every respectable greyhound owner will welcome firm action being taken against all those involved in the killing of these dogs and who has broken the law. “
However GRAI believes this to be only the tip of the iceberg. Last year there were 3,271 registered greyhound litters in Ireland. A conservative average of seven pups per litter makes 22,904 dogs, however less than 16,000 greyhounds were registered that year to race at 12 months old. Taking into account the number of greyhounds that retire each year due to age or injury GRAI estimate between 8,000 to 10,000 greyhounds disappear every year.
Marion Fitzgibbon said, “These dogs did not need to die. Greyhounds can make faithful, gentle and loving family pets. They are great with children and unlike many other breeds only need around 30 minutes walk per day. Even when these dogs are unable to race anymore usually at the young age of 3-4 years old, they can still live long and happy lives. Over 6,000 greyhounds are homed as pets every year in the UK and we would like to see greyhounds being homed as pets in Ireland’.

I trust the authorities will be called in to do a root and branch investigation of the entire greyhound racing industry in Limerick, if not the rest of the country as well. Disgusting.

Bord na gCon ‘has identified greyhounds found in Limerick grave’

THE BODY which oversees greyhound racing in Ireland has condemned the discovery of an open mass grave for racing greyhounds in Co Limerick – and says it has already identified some of the dogs abandoned there.

In a statement provided to TheJournal.ie, Bord na gCon said it “utterly condemned” the illegal disposal of greyhounds, and that investigations into how the greyhounds died had begun.

The mass grave, containing the remains of at least seven dogs, was discovered by a walker in a disused quarry in south-east Limerick over the weekend.

The dogs had not been buried, and were in various stages of decomposition.

Bord na gCon said it could also confirm that some of the dogs – which are identified as racing greyhounds by the use of mandatory tattoos on their ears – had already been identified, and that their registered owners would now be questioned by Gardaí.
The board’s welfare officer Barry Coleman said it could give “very strong assurances to the public that the perpetrators of this awful act will be pursued and we ensure they will face the full rigours of the law”.

“With the recently passed Greyhound Welfare Bill, we now have greater power to tackle cruel acts of this nature and we intend to exercise the full extent of the law following the recent discovery in Limerick.”

The board encourages owners of retired racing greyhounds to keep them as pets, and has a project in place where retired racers are rehoused in other homes in Ireland as well as in the UK and in continental Europe.

These were not doggy people that this. There are bad apples everywhere. Were they found near Rathkeale by any chance??

Disgusting scenes. If a dog is to be put down it should be put down humanely by a vet. That is the least these noble animals deserve.

Many, many dogs have their ears cut off and killed when they have reached the end of their racing life, anyone who denies this is either an apologist for the industry or a fucking eejit.

Fuck off. Where is your proof you insufferable bore?

A sadly unsurprising revelation. The industry is poisoned at its core and that core is Limericks doggy set.

Startling revelations exposed by MBB here. Investigative journalism on TFK at its very best.

It’s a bit rich you calling someone an insufferable bore you Walter Mitty fucking clown. I’ve no doubt the vast majority of people in the industry are ethical, but I’ve known several people involved in owning and training dogs in Shelboune Park and Harolds X and they’ve all told me that this fate awaits dogs that don’t make the grade or are past their shelf life. And i’d be more inclined to believe them than you.

Dunph being in France is probably a little bit out of touch with the greyhound scene here.

It brings me absolutely no joy to do so mate. The silence from the doggy set is what saddens me the greatest though. This will run and run* I feel.

*Unlike the poor helpless animals once the Limerick doggy breeders have extracted their coin from them however.

It would be grossly unfair to just blame this scandal on the Limerick doggy set. Burying scores of hounds in Dublin is not as easy as it sounds and the countryside of Ireland is littered with the corpses of Dublin owned and trained dogs, this is truly a national disgrace.

I may have to walk away from the sport after this. If the IGB don’t react appropriately to this I will have to consider my position.

Sick cunts out there.

How things have changed in the recession. There is no way local chineses would have let this opportunity pass them by when there was greater demand for their produce.

“Sport”? The “sport” is poisoned from top to bottom. Time to be rid of it once and for all. It begins here.
