Sickner!
Sheffield jackpot joy for some but misery for one!
THE latest attempt to buy the Jackpot 6 proved costly at Sheffield on Tuesday night.
There was a carry-over of almost 42,000 to start and two punters arrived at the track with the 46,656 required to cover every permutation in a carrier bag.
When betting closed as the first leg started the pool had reached a mammoth 101,110.39 and it became a very nervous time for all concerned as heavy rain hit the track, inducing fears that there might be a repeat of the previous week when one of the legs had to be declared void because water in the runningrail halted the hare and under the rules the carry-over was held out of the winning pool.
All went well, however, and after Magna Flintoff (8-11), Farloe Titan (4-1), Droopys Peaches (3-1), Derryhogan Chick (9-4), Razldazl Rosie (5-1)and Cill Dubh Light (9-2) had won their legs of the jackpot there was a short anxious wait for the dividend to be displayed.
But it was bad news for the men with the carrier bag for there were three winning tickets and the payout of 33,703.46 translated into a loss of almost 13,000 for them.
Sheffield MD John Gilburn said: The two men arrived at the track before racing saying they wanted to play all the permutations on the Jackpot and produced a carrier bag stuffed full of money. We took them into the cash room and it took us an hour to complete the count.
The two men had travelled up from the south of England. I dont know if they were part of a syndicate or what, but when they came for their money they were very philosophical about the situation. One other winner was a local punter who wished to remain anonymous, while we have still to hear from the third and I think that that bet may have been placed on the internet.
I know that they have had bigger pools at Shelbourne Park in Ireland, but that is on a Jackpot 7 and I think that our total must be the biggest that had been achieved in this country. But its back to square one again and we will be starting with a 1,000 pool on Friday.
Commentating on the jackpot, Edwin Osborne from E-tote, the company which offers punters the chance to bet into the jackpot pool off-course, said: Successful jackpots need great racing and a wide distribution network. We had interest on this super jackpot from all over the UK and Europe.
We dont currently stream from Sheffield but I think if we had then we could have seen even bigger turnover.
