A reel of Shefflin’s highlights would last roughly the time it would take me to go to the toilet. That’s from the time I got out of my chair until the time I positioned myself at the urinal. Not including the actual urination.
I could go out for a smoke and a cup of tea and Carey’s highlights reel would still be playing when I got back.
Its the whole Alex Higgins v Steve Davis argument from 30 years ago.
One more talented the other more dependable. It depends which of these attributes floats your vote really?
DJ carried a poor KK for years, Henry didn’t have his natural ability but you knew what you were getting with him. DJ failed in many AIF’s as an example.
Shefflin will go down as better and will get my vote in this one but I’d pay to watch DJ ahead of Henry.
John Power carried DJ for years
DJ’s inter-county career spanned the period from 1989-2005.
Henry’s inter-county career spanned the period from 1999-2014.
DJ has a year on him in the longevity stakes.
Yes, but what did they do in that period?
I remember Kilkenny played Galway in Thurles in a knockout championship game one year - memory is going, may have been late 90’s or early 00’s - and Galway were well ahead. Carey dragged Kilkenny back into it with a truly phenomenal performance, one of the best I’ve ever seen in the flesh. He grabbed a couple of goals and won them the game almost on his own.
Very hard to compare the two. Carey carried a weaker Kilkenny team for a while but he was outrageously talented. Probably hurlings first real superstar as tv coverage and print media coverage of games intensified.
Shefflin was just an assassin, always seemed to do the right thing. Knew when to pass, knew when to go himself, great vision and the go to man when the chips were down.
Kilkenny fans don’t realise how lucky they have been.

1997 QF. Ridiculous game back and forth.

That game in Thurles for me seals Carey over Shefflin.
Carey for me.
Carey created a buzz every time he got the ball in hand, in a mediocre team.
Shefflin was consistently very good in a very good team. As Sidney and The Big Cheese have said Carey had more brilliance about him but probably not the level of consistency that Shefflin had.

Agree, Ciarán was an all time great.

Shefflin did most things very well. You need something more than that to be the greatest ever. A mercurial spark of pure genius that could flicker into life at any moment. Carey had it. It’s like the difference between, say, Maradona and Zidane. It’s similar to why Peter Canavan edges Maurice Fitzgerald in terms of greatness.
