Agreed
I just googled it there and Sheffield Wednesday played league games there regularly
I donāt like how this fake news is seeping into the forum
Sad to see the usual LFC apologists still trying to defend the indefensible here
Sheffield Wednesday were out of the top flight for about 15 years from the start of the 1970ās to the mid 80ās. FA Cup semi final day was the only match in the year that the South Yorkshire police had to deal with anything close to a full house at Hillsborough. They just werenāt used to it or up to the task.
Just had a quick Google there
The tragedy happened in the late 80s. Wednesday were a top division team for years
Itās terrible that youāre being made do all these searches, I hope the lads are suitably ashamed
There were warning signs there for years at FA Cup semi finals at the Leppings Lane End at Hillsborough. Spurs v Wolves in 1981, Coventry v Leeds in 1987, Liverpool v Nottingham Forest in 1988. Serious crushes at all of those matches, but thankfully no fatalities.
Just googled it
34 fa cup semi finals and 1000s of league games
Celtic v Dundee in 1988 was one of the biggest near misses
I had been there just four weeks previously for the visit of Dundee United

Trivia
- Stadium was over packed, and there were people, mainly kids, sitting on the track round the pitch so that they could fit into the stadium.
- Official attendance was 60,800. Celtic directors confessed in later years attendance was actually 72,000. Stewards had to lock the gates with thousands locked outside.
- The club was heavily criticised for not making this game all ticket.
- Hundreds of season ticket holders in the main stand found that their seats were taken when they arrived at the match as too many people were admitted to the stand.
Itās a good thing the supporters at those games didnāt try to surge into the ground and end up crushing their own fans.
Poor organisation is no excuse for people acting with no regard for their fellow supporters safety.
Iāve spent the last 30 minutes reading through thousands of pages of witness statements, reports, police statements, victim reports etc and Iām now the forumās leading expert on the Hillsborough disaster. Iām ready to present:
Hillsborough - The Tank Report
-
The match was scheduled for Villa Park but changed by the FA to Hillsborough because of the fencing around the pitch.
-
The entire Liverpool support had to enter through one gate.
-
This was a crowd control method that they had only started using for semi-finals and only since the 1980s.
-
When this had been done previously there had usually been problems. At the 1981 semi-final between Spurs and Wolves there had been 38 crushing injuries including broken arms and ribs. The police said there were nearly fatalities and asked Sheffield Wednesday to reduce their capacity. Wednesday Chairman Bert McGee replied āBollocks - no-one could have been killed.ā
-
Bert McGee was a greedy fucking cunt.
-
Hillsborough had lost its safety certificate a few years previously but McGee didnāt want to pay to get it back.
-
The English FA didnāt give a fuck.
-
The ground was in poor condition and the crush barriers were in a state of disrepair and not fit for purpose.
-
Leeds fans had also written to the police saying that they felt in danger of their lives at Hillsborough through over-crowding and that the police hadnāt directed people to the tunnels properly. The Leeds fans had been saved when people in the tiers above them lifted enough of them to safety.
-
All those previous near-disasters occurred before Duckenfield took over. Liverpool v Forest was his first big game.
-
The Liverpool fans who turned up 5 minutes before kick-off turned up on-time. They werenāt late.
-
Liverpool were bringing more supporters but had less space in the ground.
-
Duckenfield was right to open the front gates when he did. He was trying to prevent fatalities.
-
Duckenfield was then supposed to close the gate for the tunnel into the terrace when the terrace got full. He didnāt do that.
-
Thatās the key mistake that caused the deaths. Duckenfield himself accepts this and says he froze.
-
During the disaster when the doors on the pitch-fence started popping open the police at first tried to close them again and wedge the fans back in.
-
There may or may not have been Liverpool fans without tickets trying to get in but thatās not illegal and wouldnāt have caused any deaths if the tunnel gate had been closed properly like it should have.
-
Itās also not unlawful to ignore the policeās advice. The police advice not driving in storm-force winds but thereās nothing unlawful about doing that.
-
Ambulance response was a fuck-up and the kick-off should have been delayed anyway.
-
After the first Coronerās Inquest the coroner, Stefan Popper, hosted a celebration party for the police.
-
At the first day of his inquiry Lord Stuart-Smith joked āLiverpool fans being late againā. The Liverpool fans that were nearly crushed outside the main gate of Hillsborough were not late, they were five minutes early for kick-off.
-
McGee was a greedy cunt who should have gone to prison. Heās basically like one of the villains in the Saw movies that Jigsaw tortures to death because they have it coming.
-
McGee was forced to resign a few months after the disaster but never apologised.
-
In 1991, only 2 years after the disaster, he was made an OBE by John Major. The disrespect towards the families of the victims is just unbelievable.
-
The Tories are absolute fucking cunts.
-
Any Irishman over the age of 15 who is seriously passionate about an English premier league team needs their head examined.
-
The posts here from anti-Liverpool and pro-Liverpool supporters alike have been fucking pathetic.
-
Celtic fans are alright.
Thatās the end of the report.
Both posters received death threats from Liverpool fans.
A minutes applause for the 96 just before kick off in the Merseyside derby.
Was it last season when the Liverpool fans booed the applause for the people that sadly lost their lives during the Munich air disaster.
Splendidly observed minutes applause from Liverpool and Everton supporters - Everton supporters have always stood with us - the 96 are their fathers and mothers and brothers and daughters too - Hillsborough unites us all
On the pitch, Divock Origi has opened the scoring - latching onto a sublime curler of a pass from Mane to push it past the advancing Everton goalkeeper and roll it into an empty net
Big man for the big occasion, yet again
The road to a top half finish starts here
MERSEYSIDE MERSEYSIDE MERSEYSIDE
Liverpool football club were the first club to offer Manchester Utd the use of players post Munich. Liverpool also let Man Utd use Anfield for a home fixture on another occasion when Old Trafford was shut. Liverpool will be there again if Manchester needs support in the future. A beautiful club.
