Lovely scallops, served in a 1980s ashtray

The other great 80s ashtray was the empty steak and kidney pie tin.

Back on the ferry now. I’d recommend a driving holiday in Spain and Portugal very highly.

Highlight of the trip?

Toledo is an amazing town (granted you can’t go 10 feet in any direction with climbing up or down a steep hill)
The El Grecos in the Cathedral in Toledo
The Rothko in the Guggenheim
Tour of Cockburns Port House in Porto
Getting mass with the pilgrims in Santiago de Compostela, the full works with choir and organ.
The food, fuck me the food was lovely (I think the fiery octopus tapas in Santiago might have been the highlight).
The wine. The txakoli wine on the Basque Country I hadn’t come across before but I’d drink it off of a sore foot and the locals are very proud of it. I bought a few boxes of it. The customs guard motioned me to roll down the windows of the car. He looked in the window and said txakoli wine, very good. Do you like. I said it’s great stuff and he laughed and waved me on.

Went to mantera yesterday. We did the guided tour. I’ve never been anywhere quite like it before. Highly recommended. The cathedral has the grimmest crucifix I have ever seen, and the only one approaching reality, but that’s just a side bar. The old city districts are the thing. You feel like you’re on a different planet in a galaxy far far away.

Based in cisterno. Rented a really lovely trulli for the week. Matera is worth a detour.
