Four of us went and two were tight for time off work so we did it short enough, 24 nights. 3 in San Fran, 2 Yosemite, 4 Vegas, 1 Grand Canyon, 7 San Diego, 4 LA and 3 up the pacific coast, 1 near San Luis Obispo and 2 in Santa Cruz. The only painful drive was from the Grand Canyon to San Diego via Phoenix. Thought we had enough time in San Fran, I would have done an extra day or two in Yosemite, 4 nights was plenty in Vegas and we only paid a flying visit to the Grand Canyon, obviously didnt go down into it hiking or anything. I was a bit underwhelmed by it after Yosemite but youd still have to see it. We planned on San Diego being a week of going out which it was and a bit of sight seeing in LA. we stayed in Hollywood and I don’t know would I recommend it, LA is just a concrete jungle with traffic jams everywhere, at least we were near the hills and the valley which is more manageable but I’d say Huntington Beach would have been better. On the coast Santa Cruz isn’t that great either but the drive is class. You have to drive within the speed limit though as others have said but outside of LA it’s a great part of America, way cleaner and more easy going than the east coast. I’d live in San Diego in the morning.
the PNW ( pacific north west) is an amazing place for a drive,
start at vancouver BC, hit I-5 thru washington, oregon and down to san fran
oregon is an amazing state, incredible scenery along the Hood River gorge,
we did this drive and then later from portland all the way to minnesota doing the Lewis and Clarke thing,
really, really enjoyed it
Please return to talking about my planned trip to NY… If you were to try fit in 2/3 nights outside the big apple also, where would you recommended that’s within a few hours drive?
Washington
Boston.
Washington DC is only about three hours on a train. Lots to see and you’ll easily spend two or three days there. Nightlife isn’t great in DC though, might need to go to Georgetown for that.
You could drive to Washington, D.C.
Train is only 3 hours pen station to union station
Flew into Denver a few years ago. After a few days skiing in Aspen, missus and i rented a car and drove to LA over a week, taking in fab national parks in Utah, hiked down into grand canyon and a night in Las Vegas. Cracking holiday. Yosemite is class alright. Road trip from San Frank mentioned above sounds great
Happy new year to all you wonderful people
Rented a convertible Mustang a couple of years ago and toured California/Vegas. Everyone should drive highway 101 once anyway.
It’s quickly becoming clear the United States of America is considered the greatest country in the world by the TFK fraternity.
To Big Sam
Fly up to Toronto
+1. Get a bus down to Buffalo. Spend a week there. Smashing city. Fuck Niagra.
God’s country.
Would it be possible to get a hop on/ hop off train ticket from Toronto to New York?
Thinking of goin to New Zealand for 3 weeks. Could you do it all in that time frame or just the south island?
Depends on what you want to do. You’d do it in 3 weeks but would be on the move every day. Check out magic bus or stray bus for tours they do. Covers most of the main spots.
Thinking of doing South America for 3 weeks in the summer. Starting off in Patagonia and heading north, spend about 7 to 10 days in Argentina and then who knows. Thinking Brazil might be too expensive with the world cup but would love to go. Any other recommendations for South America?
It’d be tight but you’d get a fair whack of it seen. Depends how long you want to spend in each place.
If possible try to work your flights that you fly into one Island and then back out from the other.
