Homemade Beer

I am looking into brewing some homemade beer myself for the festive season. Anybody have any experiences in this regard. Basic equipment seems easily purchasable in local hardware store though not sure where to get malt and yeast Have checked a few websites but not sure how trustworthy they are.

I was looking at this a few weeks ago but wasn’t sure where to get all the stuff needed. I had plans of making cider because I thought that would be easier and possibly tastier but couldn’t figure it out. Plan on looking into it again though.

I’ve no doubt you’ve looked at this forum yourself Larryduff, but I’ll put it up for the rest to see:

Worst hangover of my life ever, ever after a night on the Homemade Beer.

It was ok beer. some of my mates made it. They had problem with exploding bottles while it was fermenting

This actually reminds me of the classic Futurama episode where they brew beer in Bender.

Thanks for the link Ben. Seems to be a lot of variotions as to methods and ingredients. Would think about doing cider but you only so much of cider you can drink. Thing I like about brewing from what I have read is that the costs seem to be very reasonable, Following link seems easy to understand.

Ok lads Brewing home made beer is supprisingly easy!

Even things as stupid as potato skins can be used for making beer.
Although seen as Potn is illegal ‘eh::cough::eh’ they shouldn’t be ever;

Mixed with water in a barrel and allowed to ferment, only adding extra Yeast to make it stronger.

Seriously though, here’s how to make your own…

Apparatus needed:

*A Liebig condenser, strange looking fitting to allow CO2 to escape from the fermentation container.

*Yeast, available as dried pellets from bakery’s and some food shops.

*Buckets.

*Large containers, for instance an empty gallon water bottle.

*Distilled water, optional but better to use it!

*Grains such as wheat, or barley, used mainly to flavour the beer!

As I learned for my LC Biology, these are the steps…

1, fill the water barrel half way with distilled water.
2, add the grains to the water,##grains must be ground##
3, add the inactive Yeast pellets to the mixture,
4, insert the stopper and Liebig condenser in the top of the container.
5, fill the 'U-bend in the Liebig cond. and observe the CO2 bubbles blowing through it.

The mixture MUST be left for at least 3 days to allow for fermentation.
After this the Alcohol MUST BE CHECKED to insure that its not harmful by being too alcoholic. (anything over 30% vol. would be considered as dangerous)
Strain the Alcohol until its a golden or slightly red colour depending on the grains added.

And then BINGO, you’ve got yourself alcohol!!!

I’d recomend going to Argos and buying a home-brewing kit.
This will have all of the items mentioned above, and will also give guidlines on amounts of ingredients to use.

###Note that If a Liebig condensor isn’t used, the berr may cause the vessel to explode due to the compressed CO2.###

Hope that Helps LarryDuff?

Thats been on my mind since 5th year in School! long time…

I think I was having a wank down the bottom of class the day we learned that, I was taking boilogy to the extreme,

Big help. Much appreciated. It does seem suprisingly straighforward.
Presumambly you test the alcohol by testing it? Must be hard to get an accurate percentage content of alchohol though?
