You don’t. We can’t know anything. The best we can do is guess with the limited information we have. My current best guess is there’s a bunch of mindfucking elves in a parallel universe we are unable to perceive that are having a right good laugh at their creation. How else can you explain Limerick hurling?

I’m almost certain I’m alive.

I believe that self-awareness and feelings (i.e. I am aware that I think you’re a cunt and have feelings of animosity towards you) are characteristics of the living. By departing the world of the living, we are mere non-entities; no consciousness, no self-awareness, just nothingness.

If the question was How do I know I’m not dreaming? My answer may have been altogether different.

My take on that one would be that it’s impossible to dream within a dream. Contrary to drivel spouted by a 2010 Christopher Nolan snoozefest, it is impossible to dream within a dream. The instant you awaken from a dream is a good indication you are not dreaming.

Also, the phenomenon of déjà vu is not possible in a dream. The experience of déjà vu is a surefire sign you are not dreaming. Go read the last 300 posts in the Laochra Gael thread.
