"I was actually at the Greyhound Derby last year, would you believe. Got my hands on Liam McCarthy and even ran into Niamh Horan. But Iā€™m looking for something a little different this year."

Sidney Waddel - 23/07/10.

Get your coat, Sidney.

Cruelty to hares was something I hadnā€™t really thought about until last year. But that night was an epiphany for me. After downing ten pints of free Guinness I was on the point of wrecking the place in protest. Seeing lepjacks on the rampage in the heart of Green Party territory sickend me. Thankfully I was informed that the hares on show that night werenā€™t real. But it moved me to do something, to seek out the cancer and to eradicate it. I knew than that if I could do something, something small even, to change hearts and minds, that it would be time and energy well spent. Almost a year later I look back and think, yeah, Iā€™m glad, Iā€™m glad I was there that Saturday night. Because it made me sit up and take notice of what was happening. It planted in my heart a desire to change things. That I could change things. Yes I could. Yes I can. Yes we can.

Thinly veiled ā€œi had such a great time at the Derby last year i pre-booked my tickets for this years event months in advanceā€ post from Sidney thereā€¦

No, I got a freebie and wonā€™t be going again this year.

I see the Parliment of Catalunia have voted to ban bull fighted in the region.

Anyone ever been to one?

Yeah I was at one in Pamplona during the St Fermin festival. A superb spectacle which involves horses, donkeys, bulls, men, blood, sand, swords, chivilry, life and death. Iā€™m with Hemingway all the way.

Ernest goes bullfighting. I missed that one.

Animal hunting may lead to desire to harm humans

From John Tierney

In the tsunami of print devoted to the release of convicted rapist Larry Murphy, one less explored aspect was the fact that he was an avid animal hunter. Were the skills of stalking and killing honed until he felt ready to switch to a live target?

The link between animal and human abuse is well established. We need to deal with the fact that those who kill animals for fun have a serious medically untreated mental illness. The urge to torture and kill animals for fun is no more normal than the desire to inflict physical, mental and sexual abuse on a human victim.
