Any ideas for a trap to set on a flat roof?
I have a flat roof over the sitting room and I can hear the cats chasing either rats or mice on it every night. Where would you pick up a āliveā rat trap?
Thanks Dunph.
Very helpful.
Youād get one in any hardware shop, I dont see the point of them though. Id prefer the good old jaws type trap, but obviously you dont want cats chopped in two on your roof. Poison would be an option but they tend to store it this time of year. I suggest you put a terrier on the roof.
I set a standard ājawsā trap in one of the sheds last year, I found it about 20 yards from the shed the following day.
Apologies. Iāve edited it and it should be working properly now.
Burl Ivesā¦
Ya weād the same problem, a trap went missing, we eventually tied a new bigger trap. Never had the same problem again. Ive a feeling a cat ran off with the rat in the trap the first time though, or his buddies rushed him to A+E.
Whatās the biggest sized rat any of ye have ever seen?
The biggest iāve seen was about the size of a grown rabbit, though iāve spoke to men who have seen rats the size of small dogsā¦
I was walking the dog in wexford one evening last year and passed a field that had just had the crop harvested the day before, I though initially it was full of rabbits feeding on the spilled grain so i let the dog off to chase em, it turned out every one of them was a rat. Jesus they were massive, even the dog came running back.
That is sick. I saw a documentary before about these fields in India with crops in them and they were over-run with rats, they were breeding at ferocious rates, there would be thousands of them in a fieldā¦
I think you showed me that video before Dunph, it was rotten shit alright. A good terrier is your only man to keep them away.
One of the sisters has a yorkshire terrier, I heard they are supposed to be deadly for rats in small spaces.
Oh jesus unreal, cats are windy fuckers when a rat squares up to them but a terrier is vicious. We sent our terrier in one day after a rat in one of the stables and the screams from it were sickening, he made clean shit of him.
She has the terrier since a pup though and heās hardly been outside, let alone chase a rat. Would instinct take over if I left her in the shed or would she be afraid of her life of em? Itās only a miniature yorkie.
I think its just pure instinct in fairness, I dunno about a small yorkie though. Some rats would tower above a toy dog like her, sheād probably still do the job but itād be a fairer fight. A jack russell on the other hand would be a non-event.
This little yorkshire terrier your sister has sounds like a pussy, i wouldnāt let her near a rat, sheād probably try to play with it anywayā¦
Thereās another terrier around the home house but sheās a bit a community effort and has more interest in chasing her tail than rats. She lets the cats steal her food ffs.
I reckon the yorkie would be too small to take on a rat and would probably end up getting bitten.
Ya iād agree, i wouldnt take the chance, it be hard enough to explain to your sister that a rat ate her dog! I wouldnt mind the whole cats and dogs getting along thing with the each other, ive seen that here, but when it comes to rats they seem to team up and its gung-ho after them.
This bitch at home is in a league of her own though when it comes to cats.
One of the cats tried dumping a litter one day only for the bitch to go back the field and bring them back to her own kennel in her mouth.
Neither of these so called ādogsā the Runt has would do any damage to a rat, the yorkshire is too small and the speak easy has too big a head for its body to carry around.
