You should never judge the worth of a hurler on what he does in the month of March. I was very unimpressed with O’Donnell when I saw him against Wexford last summer. Granted he did well in the All Ireland Final replay, but that was a very unusual type game. With the damp conditions you get in the evening as you’re pushing into October, it wasn’t typical hurling championship type conditions.

The lad has started two games of championship hurling. The first day in Thurles, he was cleaned out by Tomas Waters and subbed. I’ve acknowledged he did well in the All Ireland Final replay. There’s plenty of unknown quantities though who’ve shone in the full forward line in All Ireland finals in their debut seasons. Christy Heffernan in 1982, Gary Laffan in 1996 and Walter Walsh in 2012 would immediately spring to mind. O’Donnell may turn out to be the real deal, he may prove to be a one hit wonder and fade into obscurity.
