When Richie hogan was winning HOTY it probably should have been Richie Power.
We will have to disagree there. He planed it all back but take a look at some of his scores on that Laochra Gael. They are an eyeopener. HS is now, funny enough, underrated.
Anther fella right up there for sheer innate ability: Rory Hanniffy.
An interesting set of glances… Pádraic Maher said in his recent autobiography that RP was the toughest opponent he encountered. Henry Shefflin, Jackie Tyrrell and Eoin Larkin all said in their respective autobiography RS was freely acknowledged amongst them as the best hurler in their group.
I’m not doubting his ability - I was a big fan and thought he was an excellent hurler. But as a neutral I’d find it hard to have him over the other kilkenny forwards named who would have had more flashier performances in big games
Pat Mulcahy was captain and picked ahead of him for the 3 in a row final. Taggy Fogarty made an eejit of him same day. Dunno how they didn’t start WS
Got the ball rolling in 08 down in Cork and won an All Star in Sheedy’s last season (2010). It was the years after that the injuries really started to take their toll
My recollection was that Kelly was excellent in the 2009 final defeat inspire of the missed goal chances
I think Cha Fitz 2006-2008 era was the best exponent of a modern midfielder I’ve ever seen personally. Lads like Noel McGrath and Cian Lynch being lauded as qb style hurlers who changed the game. Cha was doing that job and more in that period.
My auld lad last week Shefflin was probably the most complete forward of his lifetime. Had it every way.
He’d a very decent 2009 final. Went for the goal on the 21 yard free alright. Lar was the standout Tipp forward that day. His all round display was far superior to his hat trick exploits the following year, but goals make the headlines!
Get off that fence!
EM and EK.
I’d say Kelly would clean him. More than enough pace over 4 or 5 yards. I’m surprised people are saying Gillane is now as good as a prime EK. Gillane obviously has it physically and is a good hurler, but I’d have said EK was another level as a pure hurler.
Lar more or less played midfield that day. Played really well too
I’m surprised you have it as close between Mullane and Kelly. Thought EK would be well ahead.
A ‘false 11’ I’d nearly say.
Eamon O’Shea had it perfected for the following year v Waterford when they stuck Noel McGrath in at 11 on Brick Walsh. Of course, everyone in Tipp thought Sheedy and co were losing their marbles when they fired Paudie Maher in CF in a challenge match on Brick, trying to tease out how to play him later in the summer.

Ah… Not really. A whim. JM was selfish as well. EK was not. I know Eoin a small bit and he is very bright.
It was an incredible era looking back at it, that 10 or 15 years, serious depth of talent.

Superb hurlers.
