O ‘ Dea’s is a fine little bar . Charlie behind the counter is spot on .
You have a nice tour there now. I’d ate all of them
Give us your top 5 porter cathedrals
Thanks.
DUBLIN (aesthetics included)
1 Kavanagh’s, Glasnevin.
2 Mulligan’s, Poolbeg Street.
3 Slattery’s, Rathmines.
4 Smyth’s, Haddington Road.
5 Toner’s, Baggot Street.
Not as keen on Cleary’s, Kehoe’s, Neary’s and The Long Hall since they got ‘done up’ a bit.
Peter’s Pub was a great spot in the 1980s and the 1990s. Sold Green Spot when almost nowhere stocked it.
Back then, Kennedy’s (Westland Row) was a terrific spot with a savage pint.
Honourable mentions: Birchalls, Bowe’s, Briody’s, Doheny & Nesbitt’s, Kennedy’s (Drumcondra), McDaids, O’Connell’s (Portobello), The Brazen Head, The Confession Box, The Dawson Lounge, The Palace.
And Grogan’s, I suppose. But a little spell in there, at times, can go a long way.
What a list.
What would be your top 5 outside the M50?
Only have the one. The colour of envy.
Get the Hut in Phibsboro in there.
I also (controversially) dont care for Mulligans. To quote Peter Griffen, “it insists on itself”
Will have a think… Five is not enough…
More than fair enough. I have long been the same about The Stag’s Head.
The Hut is a fine call. Drank there a good few times in 2000s.
I obviously like the aesthetics of your classic Victorian saloon bar with snugs.
A good snug with a good pint is hard beat.
Now you said it… Amen.
A place that looks absolutely magnificent in exactly the style I love – and meant to visit this summer but could not reach on trip – is The Grey Hound in Kinsale.
Thanks. I think Fawl’s is my favourite too.
Have to visit PJ Kelly’s and O’Dea’s as well. Have the inside line from friends.
Was at a funeral in Clare.
That might solve the fuel crisis
