Great to hear ,
One ran across tbe road in front of me a few years ago, just outside Ballygarvan,
Other than that’ I saw one in Cloughduv and also in Gougane Barra

Was nearly extinct in the 70s and confined to some western counties. Significant recovery since then and has spread eastwards in recent years. A welcome feature of this has been the decline of the Grey Squirrel which features in Pine Martens’ diet. Recovery in Munster and Ulster still patchy.

I live in a green area on that map.

Some gaps in distribution in Munster where ostensibly suitable habitat exists. Generally, roadkill is usually first indication they’ve moved into an area.

I suppose a big factor would be the re-emergence of mixed forestry as a use for poor land the past 20 years

Yes, definitely a factor; along with incidence of abandoned dwellings, out- buildings etc. where they can breed.
