While that is a bit ironic, the US has been importing beef for a long while. The US cattle herd is at the lowest it has been in decades, mostly due to long term droughts in large parts of the western and southern USA. Beef prices are at an all time high, those ranchers that do have cattle are actually doing quite well and raking it in.
I thought it was soybeans and not beef was the bone of contention? As @horriblecunt states, beef prices in US going up due to reducing availability.
