Wrote a 5000 word essay on Serbia before Christmas. There’s a great documentary on Youtube, Bandage. It’s called The Death of Yugoslavia. It’s by the BBC and is 6 parts of 45mins each. If you start it now you’ll have it watched by 4am or so.
Briefly though, the whole conflict was based on Zvonimir Boban kicking a policeman at a Red Star v Partizan match.
Thanks Thrawneen - I’m a Suker for documentaries like that. What I really want to know is how busy will mass be on the Sunday in Poznan? I don’t want to stand in the aisle at the back of the church because a load of Polish, Irish and Croatian cunts have piled in for a right good service.

Based on a jolly good book by Misha Glenny. Well worth reading.
I live with a Serb who joined the army as a 19 year old at the start of the war. She is, by her own admission, a little bit fucked up by the whole experience.
Being honest, Croatia will be looking at Ireland as a game to get points in but Ireland will say the same thing. Suspicion that Spain might be tired but people thought that two years ago after Inter beat Barcelona and Spain went on to win the World Cup.
Ireland are an emotional side, similar to Croatia, will bring plenty of fans, again similar to Croatia. Trap adds organisation to that without losing passion and energy. So well organised that you won’t get many chances against Ireland. Has been analysiing a few of their games (Slovakia, Russia, Croatia friendly - all scoreless). Don’t concede and don’t give up many clear-cut chances. Bit lucky against Russia maybe. Slovakia dominated possession against Ireland but Ireland had the better chances. More efficient.
Croatia don’t have a great league and have small population but producing 2 players every couple of years for the national team. They don’t have 100 great players but they have 20 and that’s what they need. They do well in basketball and water polo too.
He then had a go at the Turks which I didn’t appreciate.
Has already started talking to the players about the Irish, Italian and Spanish teams. Don’t have time in international football to just talk to players before the tournament, he’s already analysing the opponents and meeting the players, talking to them.
Ken Earley said that Trap doesn’t talk to the players as much so might find it easier to drop them. Slaven said that was an excellent point and some things are harder from having the relationship with his players and he finds it difficult but it’s better for the players who are in the squad.
Finally, heavy metal is very honest music, gives you energy and it’s from the soul.
Still nothing concrete emerging about what established player is likely to miss out. Daniel McDonnell in the Irish Independent yesterday mentioned that it was injury related rather than a personal issue. His piece included a quote from John Delaney saying Trap had discussed the situation with him but it would be clarified by the manager when he announces the squad next week. Seems odd because there’s nobody really in the midfield area currently out injured and you’d expect whatever player it is to have been pushing to get whatever operation is needed completed in time to be available for Poland (like say Hunt getting his hernia operation a couple of weeks ago).
There does seem to be a few different interpretations of that interview too. Not everyone there had the same take on what Trap said so it’s hard to rely on just what Malone wrote. Hard to think of anyone who isn’t currently injured but might need an operation and would choose to have it - particularly a senior player.
I think the player to miss out will be Seámus Coleman. I’m wildly speculating that his series of niggly injuries throughout the season have caught up with him and he needs an operation. An Everton supporter in work informs me that he hasn’t played since his under par cup semi-final cameo a couple of weeks ago - I have not verified the veracity of this statement. I’m further guessing that it’s a young player, like Coleman, because a senior / veteran player would insist on going (even with an injury) because he would fear a lack of further opportunities to play in such tournaments. It could be argued that Coleman isn’t an established player (and he’s certainly not in terms of appearances) but he’s been established in the squad for 18 months now anyway.
I thought Coleman was going to miss out anyway? Someone run through the squad again for me. I certainly wouldn’t expect Coleman to be in it. Does that leave room for McCarthy, Fahey and McClean all to travel.
Other player could be Paul Green maybe. Wonder if his knee is acting up.
Well Coleman was named in the 24 for the Czech friendly, which became 26 when McClean and Green were added to it, so I don’t think he was ruled out anyway. But he was in that group probably fighting for the last couple of places.
I certainly think it’s time for a separate ‘Name The Squad You Would Choose’ thread.
Yeah, he’s been resting a groin injury lately with Birmingham looking to ensure he can play a part in the Championship play-offs. It could be him all right - given Birmingham’s situation it’s not like they would allow him to miss their promotion push in order to priotise being fit for the Euros. So he’s different to Stephen Hunt who was given permission to have an operation lately that could have waited until the end of the season.
I see St Ledger had a cut off the players who refused/withdrew from the squad last summer and said they on;y have themselves to blame for not going to the Euro’s
