The great Alberto Tarantini was unattached when he played for Argentine at the 1978 World Cup. It means fuck all in the international sphere. There are numerous examples of out of contract players performing at World Cups particularly amongst the African nations.

Delighted for McShane. He got a great ovation coming off on Saturday after a solid display and I think our support were acknowledging his commitment to the cause after the disappointment of not making the initial selection. Of course there were still a few utter cunts whistling and cheering sarcastically any time he did anything on the ball. A shame for Kevin Foley though.
It now appears Foley isn’t injured at all and McShane has been called up due to doubts over Dunne / O’Shea / St Ledger

Looks like Kevin Foley is dumped for Paul McShane because of minor problems suffered by Dunne/St Ledger. McShane can cover centre half too.
