Ireland politics (Part 1)

What do we gain by keeping it??? Be it 20m or 5m getting rid if it saves money but itā€™s not even about that, itā€™s irrelevant. Old timers or failed politicians is all itā€™s good forā€¦itā€™s a joke, a talking shop, a college debating chamberā€¦get rid!

When 50% of the legislation passed at the moment is passed without debate in the DƔil then do you see value in a second debating chamber? The Seanad actually does a pretty good review job. Big change needed to how senators are elected as well as other political reforms but abolishing it is cutting off your nose to spite your face really.

If you want to save money go after ministerial aides, probably about 5 times the cost of the Seanad.

What legislation has the Seanad ever stopped??? It has no powers!!! Itā€™s useless. A talking shop for aspiring or failed politiciansā€¦ People talk about Gordon Wilson or even now John Crown being great Senatorsā€¦the Taoiseach can elect a Senator to the Cabinet, when has that ever happened??? Why isnā€™t John Crown Minister for Health? Mmmm
Itā€™s a joke, does nothing. Get rid!

Dumb. What has it stopped is a stupid question. Thatā€™s not its job. Ask how much it has initiated or how many amendments it has made.

It needs reform, do that instead.

Quite right. All the great Parliaments of the world have their ā€œUpper Housesā€. Why should we turn into Zimbabwe to
ā€œsaveā€ ā‚¬20m. a year and placate/assuage that simpleton Kenny.

Vote No.

There is no vote to reform it. It has no consequence. Why vote to save something worthless and then hope that these same politicians reform itā€¦ Not all the people can vote in Seanad elections so how can people even say this talking shop is even democraticā€¦ Vote yes to abolish and then use your vote properly in the next local and general electionsā€¦

The Dail is full of village fucking idiots. Kenny has been there 30+ years and in all that time he has done fuck all.

The Seanad donā€™t stop bills, they review the bills and then make amendments. The problem
With the Seanad is the amount of influence parties have in who they put in there. I would prefer it to be reformed and for the people to elect senators and for politicians to state their intention to run for the Seanad or the Dail. They can only choose one.

I wouldnā€™t trust the fuckers in the Dail to
Introduce legislation without some form of review and the fact that Kenny canā€™t even
Go on tv a debate the reasons for scrapping tells me to vote yes because the guy proposing the change canā€™t even debate the reasons to get rid of it.

The fact that Kenny has promised only to reduce the amount of guillotined legislation (I think he said to 20%?) shows shows how serious he is about democratic reform. The fucking joker.

The Dail is full if Village idiots voted by the people. The Seanad isnā€™t voted by the people thereby its not democratic. FF and Michael Martin want to keep the seanad but this is abcomplete u turn cos they previously wanted to abolish it.

It can debate, jaysus it does plenty of that, but it canā€™t change or alter anything in a significant way.

John Lonergan for prisoners, Tony Geoghan for drug addicts, Fr Peter McVerry for the under privileged have done more for those who needed it without being Senators. They didnā€™t sit around all day pontificating on 40k expenses on top of their 65k salary in their little clubā€¦and for whatā€¦nothing!!! ā€¦get rid!

Your posts on this thread (48-52) are an indication that more maturity is required in the electorate, never mind in the
Oireachtas. Please desist from waffling on and pursuing Fine Gael directives.

In canvassing terms, on the ground, Fuck off.

?? More maturity, What have any of the said names between 48 - 52, actually done bar take 60k salary and 40k expenses!!! I certainly would not pursue a FG directive so your way off the chart there. Fact is its ineffective, members are not voted by the majority of the people and if it was abolished in the morning nobody would notice! Anybody who votes to keep the Seanad have been hoodwinked. If you want change, you can do it in the next local and general elections. Bertie put in Eoghan Harris for defending him on the Late Late, Inda put in Mary Louise Oā€™Donnell for defending him on Vincent Brownā€¦nuff said! Get rid!

Donā€™t worry pal, Iā€™ll be around tomorrow to make it all better, when I can actually make a cohesive statement on anything and am less filled with porter.

Ebeneezer Goode is peddling a line very close to the FG party line. I know he had some involvement with Sean dolphin many years ago but ibthought he had left the party. It is worth noting in all of his posts to date he has never once criticised Nora Owen

Never voted for the drug dealers mother, she was a useless councillor and done fuck all as a TD, John Oā€™Donoghue marked her better than Ryan McMenamin on Mossy Quinn, from lo an behold Portoā€¦

What you have for breakfast? Oā€™Brien Sandwiches?? Did Brody drop them down? Have you still got his posters in the shed or are you and DB hoping he runs again so you can scurry up the ladder for a free lunch??
