Arsehole for finally taking baby steps on immigration issues?
What was actually problematic is the previous minister in charge promising âown door accommodationâ. Ireland cannot sustain the numbers coming in, not with the demands that a modern welfare state makes of it. That needs to be accepted.

Heâs not tackling numbers tho is he? Heâs making it harder for those already here⊠now, the argument might be that this will act as a deterrent ? But Iâd agree with the author that some of the moves could further alienate immigants already here. Thatâs not acceptable.
I also agree with your consistent points that we have taken in way too many over the last 5 or so years. Itâs refreshing to see youâre not being called a racist for pointing out the obvious⊠my ability to see problems long before they play out doesnât do me any favours in this regard .
However, weâre in a catch 22 insofar as we canât shut up shop, we need some level of migrants, tho we should shut up because all our systems are absolutely creaking⊠how do you find a happy medium?
Overall, as a small country we have a better shot than most for integrating people harmoniously. And i think Overall weve done a decent job⊠the numbers are simply staggering yet 99% of people have been accommodating in welcoming our new friends into the country.

Depends. There are certain additional rights with citizenship that makes family reunification easier (for example). You also donât have the right to stay indefinitely under all of Irelandâs various visa categories unless you stay forâŠ8 years. So the thinking might be if thereâs an employment retrenchment in the next couple of years that the State wonât be tied up with a lot of people on âeasyâ citizenship.
His approach seems to be largely about small things, which overall is probably the only way to tackle given a load of little things led up to this. Heâs onto the student stuff as well, for example.
Still not tackling the international protection stuff to the same degree, although a lot of the goodies Roderic put in have been rolled back. And government as a whole has learned from UkraineâŠ
I donât think Ireland has a better shot at all. The reality is that it is both physical infrastructure and State infrastructure (ie services) that are more important than ever. The only reason Ireland has been able to do this is because of the pots of extra money it has.
Itâs easier to become an Irish citizen for people whoâve never been here than for people who live and work and contribute here. OâCallaghan is an arsehole.
